We never had more than four boats in the RCN and it was mostly a volunteer service. I would say we have about two boats crews that can probably sail in a pinch. I don't think the grown ups have realized that 6 to 8 boats worth of crews is remotely attainable. You are right that once new boats...
100%. Not why this wasn't more closely followed to ensure the defects was minimal. I did see a recent hills times story saying that the RCN is looking at not putting a helo hauldown due to cost saving.
Quite aware of the trials report and the whole list of issues that need to be rectified. No one is waving anything away, these issues have to be rectified before helos can operate.
I don't disagree but we have them and are working on the issues. I have about 35 years in the technical side of the RCN and I was surprised on how complex they really are. Pretty cool actually.
All I can say without going into specifics is that yes the ships have defects but some have been blown out of proportion by certain members of the media however many of these defects have been rectified as thats what we do in the Navy find solutions to problems. My current "job" is sailing on...
Again that wouldn't work. You would have ships that would be tied up icebound in the winter and to be honest crews would not want to stay in those places. Remember during the winter we use these ships in places other than the Arctic.
If we were serious spend a billion to build a tankfarm...
We normally don't wear coveralls so any unform gets worn out pretty fast and looks a bit rough at times. The biggest safety aspect is the sleeves. The old uniform we could and was exspected that the sleeves while in the machinery spaces were rolled down. It seems now comfort over safety.
