Prestwick as an Operational Support Hub?

Good field. Good weather (by British standards). Close to deepwater docks in Glasgow. Handy to Faslane and Galloway and Carrick make for good training grounds. And Prestwick is looking for something to do with itself when the USAF isn't busy in Europe.

Oh, and a few hundred golf holes within walking distance of end of the runway - including the Old Troon.

Not to mention the many quality...... manufacturing facilities.... for beverages.....that are in the vacinity to sustain the detachment.
I realized about midway through my 11-12 year stint in that I had very much joined the wrong branch of the military…

Now when younger folks ask me about my time in, or mention they are thinking of joining, I’m the best recruiter the Air Force has!

A Major General for 3 planes and 55 pers? Or did I not read that right?

Crappy writing. MGen Huddleston is the Commander 1 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg, commanding all operational RCAF assets, but he has the CJOC/CAF title also as the CFACC, Canadian Forces Air Component Commander. He’s also Commander CANR (Canadian NORAD Region), reporting directly to NORAD HQ in Colorado Springs for NORAD operational issues. He’s not the Det Comd in Prestwick; that’s probably a Major.

You need to join the right part of the air force, if you don't fly or fix planes you're third rate in the eyes of the RCAF, regardless of DEU.

Go Loadie, all the RCAF fun, but in CA DEU.

AIRCRA & LDA if you pick the right unit! 😉

I'd say that all the services have that slant.

The air force was notably bad, based on my experience with all three. I don't have to worry about it anymore since I changed DEU.

The artillery, and navy treated me as a specialist. The air force treated me as an inconvenience at best... apart from the MH and Tac Hel people I worked with.

Prestwick was used during Kandahar rotation periods for fuel and crew changes. Our plane broke down during a crew change coming home in 2006. I was very impressed by the small team that arranged for buses and hotels for all of us.

Prestwick has been a transatlantic spot for a long time. It most handles charter and cargo and the local commerce is attuned to handling that kind of traffic. Makes sense that it is being used as an OSH.

I find it interesting that we chose not to use the preplanned and resourced OSH in Germany.

I suppose the air det is being used as a hub for RCAF lift, so not the whole range of OSH? It is focused on the big movers, so they went with a spot that fits that role best (location, space at airfield, local industry support to that role etc)?
