Learning not to talk to women from certain households without permission kind of stuff. And learning from colleagues who have different backgrounds.

Learn from colleagues who have the same background.
Reminds me of a scene from the Jodie Foster version of Anna and the King:Especially when you have got a couple of hundred years of history where you have been told you have a special responsibility to look after the peoples of the rest of the world and raise them to your standards and share the benefits of your life.
It sucks pretty hard to be told that the preference is to return to burning widows, maintaining harems and kowtowing to emperors.

Anna: The ways of England are the ways of the world.

right cause racists will forget that they're racists once they're no longer reminded that they're racists.Keep bringing it up and it will never go away.
No, but the genuine racists were already a tiny minority of socially outcast people.right cause racists will forget that they're racists once they're no longer reminded that they're racists.
What, a guy can’t change his mind?Pretty crazy how an OG nazi sympathizer hung around long enough to form a political party. For a guy that tried to join the resistance he had a pretty rosy view of them.
From that second article:
So yeah, maybe they have fewer people in the departments but it seems like a planned thing due to the season. In December, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, transitioned to “Winter Preparedness staffing levels statewide.” That essentially means fewer staff members. Why? “This adjustment aligns with a seasonal decrease in fire activity and aims to strategically optimize resources as fire risks lessen during the cooler months.”
In short, winter is supposed to bring rain to California, which dampens vegetation and limits the threat and extent of wildfires. But that’s when weather is behaving as usual—not in dangerous and unpredictable ways due to climate change, as the wildfires raging in Southern California make all too clear.
Interesting statement about having to cary a bloke out of a fire...
I’m pretty sure I’d be hard pressed to carry some folks in the CAF out of a fire. Besides, isn’t there a physical test to join a fire department?
That got me searching for the full video. It’s actually about a (fictional) show about women of colour in police and fire roles. You did Listen to the part where she says the man shouldn't have put himself in that position, no ?
Sounds like a great firefighter. Top shelf quality.
Edit to add: That video was put out in the summer / fall of…2023? The show came out from 2018-2023 on Fox, then picked up by ABC last year. I find it interesting that so many outlets are picking this up now.
Possible. I also came across this articleSo yeah, maybe they have fewer people in the departments but it seems like a planned thing due to the season.
As California contends with an era of extreme wildfire, the U.S. Forest Service this summer boosted firefighter staffing in the state for the first time in five years. Still, the number of federal wildland firefighters in California remains greatly diminished after years of hiring challenges, renewing concerns about fire response.
We used to give people bravery medals for this, now we just say they shouldn't have been thereThat doesn't change the fact she says the man shouldn't have put himself in that position.

Everybody knows the common phrase "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail". Well, when you are conditioned to look at every interaction with others through a racial/intersectional lens, every interaction has a much higher chance of being some form of "ism".
Maybe the person isn't being mean to you because they're racist, maybe they're just an asshole, or maybe they're having a bad day. Alternatively, maybe they just don't like you individually... Maybe they just don't come from the same background as you, and don't realize that what they said is offensive to you.
That's where education, and a bit of understanding can go a long way. Unless you want to keep people divided, because thereiswas great money to be made selling "training" and guilt-porn books.
