Trudeau Popularity - or not. Nanos research

Thanks Brihard, I knew it wasnt' Fort McMurray but it does go to show how fast "temporary" housing can be put up to accommodate large scale numbers of people. They definitely aren't as robust as traditional builds but when you figure you can house entire towns/small cities in a single camp...

Which U.S. College Major is the Worst for Finding a Job?

I often think of a snippet read many years ago talking about promotion boards and the qualifications needed in the British Army. Fluency in a second language - preferably on of the core Indian languages - was give the same points as attendance at formal post secondary schooling. It did...

Which U.S. College Major is the Worst for Finding a Job?

Wife does the early childhood care gig. Once she gets her upgraded qualification....after two years of work and 16+ courses....she figured the pay raise would have taken over 10 years of work just recoup tuition. Only reason she's doing it is due to the Feds picking up the extra training...

Which U.S. College Major is the Worst for Finding a Job?

Some of the best advice I got was a follows: 1) what does the job actually pay if you go to X school? I might have work but if I'm earning less than minimum wage why waste the tuition 2) What does the salary actually mean for purchasing power. It was a very humbling experience just before...

    2024 Wildfire Season

    2024 Wildfire Season

Except the BC fire was a slash pile that got away. Not arson. Surprised they announced it in the news article but it's not a surprise as slash pile burning is well known to hold hot spots that get exposed under the right conditions and then take off into a wildfire.

To put it in perspective here in Alberta...my January power bill was 10$ less than the carbon tax rebate we got for a family of 3. $365 bill....and over 60% was the carbon tax. Just on the power and gas for our house it's pushing $300 a month in carbon tax and we're not living large...1980...

Ricks Napkin Forces Challenge Part 2 BIG Numbers

I can agree with with the UH1Y as part of the Bell fleet...heck that aligns well with a lot of the civilian users that still use variants of the 212 simplifying cross training. Does not still to be in production though which raises a question about currency of airframes and future support...

Ricks Napkin Forces Challenge Part 2 BIG Numbers

I used the LAV6 mostly because it's what I've seen. I don't know enough to argue the merits of CV-90 vs. Bradley for example and tracked vs. wheeled. Preference is for wheeled due to speed (I think?) but more important is having enough units purchased to cover not just deployed units but...

Ricks Napkin Forces Challenge Part 2 BIG Numbers

It is 2025. The Center Thinking Party of Canada has beaten Trudeau and Poilievre both did NOT win. Out of No where, the newly Formed Center CTPC swept into a majority government. YOU are now tasked as CDS and redesigning the forces from the ground up. You have these boundaries 1. Total Armed...

Rick (Master Crayon Eater) on choosing your political horse

Pretty simple set of initial criteria for me: 1) you have to actually campaign in the riding. If I show up on election day and you've made no effort to even put signs up you're not a viable option to support my interests 2) Fiscal accountability is key. Which means not spending like a...

    2024 Wildfire Season

Was there at Kelowna too...on holidays though. Not going to speak on tactics as I was not involved and don't know enough about what was going on in BC at that exact time. The Convair CV-580's still do good service and frankly some of the larger airframes like the Convair are nice in the...

    2024 Wildfire Season

Might have been one of the Coulson C-130. I didn't see it but it was active in May/June in Alberta. I'm not aware of any blue/white color schemes off the top of my head that would match Coulson Aviation to bring another C-130 airtanker online this summer - Skies Mag. See Tanker #132

    2024 Wildfire Season

The CL-515 is still a concept and while the -215 and -415's are good planes they also fill only part of the role. For example they can haul some people but not alot due to the water tanks and scooping design. Coulson has 3? C-130's certified for civilian use and is trying to source more...

    2024 Wildfire Season

I personally really like the concept of the MAFF's unit as they are a quick exchange process allowing a C-130 to move from a cargo hauler or people hauler to an air tanker. And have proven the technology on extended multiple day deployments. Don't get me wrong...ideally this is a...

    2024 Wildfire Season

It really varies by jurisdiction. Some provinces investigate every fire while others it's only suspicious fires. However when you're dealing with suspicious fires it's not a simple case of "he did it" but also establishing a sufficient case of evidence to be able to charge a person with...

    2024 Wildfire Season

There is already the modular MAFF's units in use by the US National Guard C-130's and Coulson (private fleet) uses a similar system. It's not just about being able to drop once but also the cycle times involved to maintain the wet line. That being said I haven't seen the cardboard trials yet...

    2024 Wildfire Season

And then there was this commitment made by the Prime Minister yesterday: https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/canada-to-help-chile-battle-wildfires-1.6764676 No idea what agency was asked or what resources he's referring to as most are still cleaning up from last year/preparing for this season.
