In the late 1990s we had COs who referred to the "Light" Bns (which they weren't) as equipment deficient Bns (which they probably were...but trying very hard to be something else and likely succeeding with time).
LCD Soundsystem "Dance Yrself Clean Live". Great band, great song, and this live version is absolutely awesome..... at about 5 minutes in this song becomes pure performance joy

In one of my "purple" jobs, I had an RCMP Inspector, ERT guy, who worked for me.
He used to say to me "Hey Boss, cops don't go where the big trees grow", referencing the difficulties RCMP ERT had in the green vice urban environment.
They have their work cut out for them on this one in the...
Had a situation when I was RSS. MCpl instructor on a recruit course was harassing recruits having them walk around with a toilet bowl ring around their neck if they fucked up.
I had him charged after an investigation. I believe it was the first charge they'd had in a very long time (a...
Agreed completely. Not unhappy that it is unlikely my two sons will ever be joining.
Loyalty and "unlimited liability" should be two way streets. Not the case anymore.
Not the Canadian Forces I joined almost 35 years ago, and served in for almost 33 years.
We had good individual augmentation in the early to mid '90s from Reserve units who had a "Mortar Task", but I would have wanted a lot of work up for full mortar dets and especially MFC, Fire data calculations and FSCC.
Given that Pioneers and especially Mortars were some of the most dangerous things we used to do in an Infantry Bn, I would be very leery of penny packeting this capability at a section level, with augmentation to come from the Reserves. There were lots of mortar accidents back in the day. ...
I deferred promotion to LCol by a year to stay in a SOFCOM unit as the DCO.
Don't think you can be forced to defer a promotion.
I volunteered......probably stupidly deferred, but I wouldn't do anything different in the same situation again.
As a former infantryman with many years in the "Light" role, I would alway leave an SF kit behind to bring other essentials on the advance. My toughest decisions were always what needed to be left behind on Light operations. More ammo (7.62 link, claymores, 60mm mor, 84, etc) would always make...
The latest Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 are "Guaranteed" to shoot sub-MOA out of the box. Mine is a 25-06 and with my first box of Federal Vital-Shok 115 gr Nosler Partitions it was shooting sub-MOA with a 4-12 Leo VX-R. They make a 6.5 Creedmore too.
Shoot a modern fancy factory round, or...
We had DM in my rifle coy in '02, and even got C3 issued. Recce Pl and the Sniper Union were quite upset, as usual :) Apparently bolt action rifles and scopes were thought to be too complicated for a Rifle Coy. Pretty sure the recommendation made it into the Lessons Learned documents. Don't...
