General Eitan Rafuul (retired) of the Israel Defence Force,   drowned today.   The endless challenges and debates about Middle East politics aside, the man was a great leader in any soldier's book simply because he truly practiced the priniciple that your men come first and he never expected you to do something that he would not do.

He personified "follow me" and his troops admired him for it.  He always went, as Napoleon once observed about one of his generals, to the sound of the cannons.    During a 37 year career he lead both paratroopers and tankers in combat and was wounded 4 times.   As a battalion commander during the 1956 Sinai Campaign he was the first paratrooper out of the airplane door when the IDF made its first combat jump to capture the Mitla Pass.    He commanded a brigade in the 1967 war and a division on the Golan Heights in the '73 war.   He was Chief of Staff from 1977-1983.

Rest In Peace Sir, your men will always love you   :salute:
