Army college fires Navy captain

A Navy captain in charge of the Navy Element of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., was relieved of command last month.

Capt. Gary Noble was fired July 20 by Rear Adm. Gary Jones, head of Naval Education and Training Command, after an Army investigation. The reason cited for Noble’s dismissal was a “poor command climate,” said Naval Education and Training command spokesman Ed Barker. The Navy transferred Noble to Naval Station Great Lakes July 21 for temporary duty.

The sea service plans no disciplinary action against Noble, Barker said.

Noble declined comment through a Navy spokeswoman.

The Navy Element of the Army Command and General Staff College provides the “maritime perspective” to the Army school and provides direct support for Navy and Coast Guard personnel stationed at Fort Leavenworth. The element also provides instructors for joint classes and Navy-specific courses at the college. The Navy Element staff is small, ranging from eight to 11 members, according to the Navy.

Noble is currently on leave, but is slated to report to duty as a watch officer on the staff of the office of the chief of naval operations at the Pentagon, said Joy Samsel, a Naval Education and Training Command spokeswoman.

Cmdr. Peter Callaghan is acting supervisor of the Navy Element at the Army Command and General Staff College until another officer receives orders to fill the billet, Samsel said.

I dont think it would be appropriate to make a specific comment unless it becomes public knowledge. Poor command climate usually means that Noble didnt play well with others. He may have run afoul of the new CG Combined Arms Command LTG Caldwell. Last year USN Vice Admiral Joe Sestak was relieved due to a "poor command climate". Sestak, now a Congressman, was arrogant and a notorious bully and owed his position to Vern Clark. When Admiral Mullen became CNO Sestak was sent packing.
