Up until a couple days ago Asteroid 2024 YR4 had a 3% chance of striking the Earth. NASA has since suspiciously downgraded it, and suggested it has a slightly higher chance of hitting the moon.

Why do you say suspiciously? As soon as it hit the radar as a concern they began doing a bunch more observations in order to be able to more precisely map its orbit. With those further observations they were able to almost entirely rule out the risk.

Because every disaster movie about a meteor or asteroid striking Earth has an initial period in it where the government is either covering it up or lying about it - see especially movies produced by The Asylum.

I'm guessing the theory is that is you need more than 14 days in a bunker, you need a pretty elaborate system that the .gov isn't providing to individual families.

Sure this wouldn't end humanity but it might have caused some property damage. The Tunguska Event had a meteor estimated to be 50m-60m wide flatten 2,150 square KMs of forest. 2024 YR4 is estimated to be 40m-90m.
