A good friend of mine and my self are both looking into joining the regular forces.  Problem is that  my buddy has a weapons charge from when he lived in thunder bay as well as a past of crime from when he was young.  He has since grown up from his past, and has really cleaned his life up!  He wants to do something with his life, and whats to aid others, do something honourable.  The army came into mind.  He really wants to join but because of his past we have been told that he can't join.  Is there any way that he can get around this, and do what he dreams of?

Thanks guys
Justin

If he truly has turned around - and has solid evidence/testimony to prove it - he should try to get a pardon for all offences on his record. If he can get that pardon then he's good to go. If he can't get a pardon, then my bet is that he's SOL. Tell him to talk to the recruiting office to see what he has to do to be considered.

Was it a recruiter that told him he was not eligible?  In many cases a person with a criminal record can join as long as he has met certain requirements.  A lot depends on the crime and the sentence.  Tell your friend to contact the nearest Recruiting Centre and find out for sure.

You friend should be able to join,  it all depends on the circumstances of what his criminal record is for. Also one thing that may help your friend is for him to get a pardon for what he did and then there should be no problem, but its hard to say, it could've also been that the person you talked  might of been mistaken or not clear when your friend was told that he could not join. Try in get in contact with a higher ranking person to get more exact info if you can, it wouldn't hurt to try.
