Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

The role(s) currently associated with the MCDV are quickly changing due to technological advances. Replacing the MCDVs will not be with a similar vessel but rather 2 different ones. An inshore patrol vessel (small fast corvette (a la Visby) and an offshore mine hunting "mothership". Only my personal opinion.
Would a vessel such as the Bras D'Or serve as an inshore patrol ship? After all, we already own the prototype.

Saw that thanks. Interesting vessel. Would 4 be enough for the RCN?
I go with 6, you have one on each coast in refit at any one time, leaving you with 1 on each coast to do coastal stuff and one for oversea's work.

Actually a Batch 2 River Class and one of these would make a very useful packet for overseas work, the River Class can be the escort and provide assistance as required. They could do survey's of 3rd world harbours and provide charting and clear harbours for countries that can't afford it and make Canada a valued global entity.

Hydro foil's are very niche vessels and they never really got through all the issues, which is why you don't see many. I got to ride on a Soviet passenger one in 1970.

Not sure of other reasons for not building another more updated prototype is their susceptibility to damage from hitting logs and other floating objects at high speed.

The RCN will have some interesting hurdles to deal with for the MCDV replacement, largely coming down to what roles the ships will be required to undertake. Something like a Batch II River class OPV would be a major improvement over the MCDV's in all of their roles except mine warfare while something like the joint Belgian/Dutch MCM vessels would be very capable mine warfare vessels, being obviously lesser in the other roles.

If the RCN only wants to procure a single class, there will have to be sacrifices somewhere. A purpose built mine warfare vessel is not going to be as good at OPV roles and vice versa. You could likely modify a design into a jack of all trades, able to do both roles effectively enough but obviously you won't get as effective a platform compared to a specialist design.

Another option would be to procure two classes, one specialist OPV and another specialist mine warfare vessel.

It will be interesting to see what the RCN eventually decides is a priority going forward.

Surface Effect Craft = Hovercraft with less parts to fix and more directional stability. Downsides are more exposed propulsion. Although in this case they went with waterjets which makes good sense.

Talking to a European about debris in the water and asks how big, so I hold my hands 2' apart. He says: "Oh sticks that size are no problem", I replied: "Umm that's how wide they are" , his eyes bugged out. Never sailed the East Coast is it ice or debris?

Waves.... lol
Yes...ish.

Completely anecdotal but the waves in the Pacific can be worse. Just that those really bad ones aren't really where we operate.

North Atlantic, on the other hand...

I will take the longer, higher amplitude of the Pacific over that Atlantic short wave, any day…
As long as its not on the beam... beam Pacific swells sailing back and forth to San Diego are 🤢

Ah, I was thinking of ingestion issues which can be the bane of jets
Yah those fancy Norwegien vessels are not deisgned for being outside of their island and fjord areas. They hide in the terrain and sneak around.

I've said it on this thread before, RCN ships need to have a consideration for seakeeping in rough waters. Which usually means larger ships.

As an aside I've been told ancidotally that AOPS is pretty comfortable in rough weather with the stabilizer fins out.

So defense of the West Coast and the Thousand Islands. Sounds like a nice job. (Actually got to speak to a Captain of the Fairmiles patrol the West Coast in WWII. Pretty sweet gig.

I think some did and others quite happy to miss out. He never mentioned missing out.
Were any of the "Zombies" (my dad always called them that) in the RCN? And that they couldn't be deployed to the European Theater? Was there conscription to the RCN?
