medical/dental coveragefor a Reservist

In about a week, I‘am no longer covered under my dad‘s plan, since I‘ll be 19. I‘m wondering if I can get medical/dental converage/insurance through the CF.

Unless things have changed, you can claim up to 80% of your dental work through the Reserves. There is no entitlement for medical treatment for a Reservist unless you are on Class B or Class C service. Class A and Class B service under 180 days are only entitled to emergency care and required examinations.

Reservist can be employed under the following classes of service:

Class A - Part time service (full or half days employment). This is the most common type of service for Reservists. Very limited benefits (see example in previous post) provided to the member.

Class B under 180 days - Full time service (24/7) for less then 180 continuous days. Most often used for short callouts in order to attend a course or tasking. Benefits remain fairly limited although medical access seems to be much greater.

Class B over 180 days - Full time service (24/7) for over 180 days. Most often used for personnel filling staff positions. For example Resource Management Specialists (RMS - new administration clerks) or staff officers. Benefits are much greater in terms of dental and medical benefits.

Class C - Fixed period of service used for Reserve personnel engaged in domestic and international operations. Same pay and benefits as a Regular Force member.

Hope this helps.

Anyone know if the CF has any dental coverage for reservists?

6. Coverage for Members of the Reserve Force

As a part of the Reserve Health Benefit Plan, some Reserve Force members and their dependants are eligible to participate in the Reserve Dental Care Plan. The rules of eligibility are:

    * A member who is enrolled in the Primary Reserve, who is not covered by any other dental plan or programme and is in good standing with the Unit, may request and be assigned a reserve dental plan certificate number and will be covered by the plan. For new enrolments, the member will be eligible to participate in the plan on the day following three months of service.
    * A member serving on Class A or Class B service (180 days or less) is entitled to dental care coverage for him/herself only, under this plan.
    * A member serving on Class B service (in excess of 180 days) is entitled to comprehensive dental care through CF dental units. The member's eligible dependants, however, become eligible to claim for reimbursement of eligible dental services under this plan, for the duration of the member's Class B service.

First I'll appologise if this is in the incorrect forum. I wasn't sure whether to use logistics, medical or general etc..  (And sorry if it sounds like a sob story, mods please put it in the proper forum)  :)

I have a question about dental coverage for reservists.
I was told the CF will pay 90%
I went to have my teeth checked out and I ended up needing 5 fillings and 2 crowns. The dentist's office needed $800 up front for "lab fees" for the crowns. The dentists office said I should get this back, which they were wrong- I have to pay the full $800.

My  2 crowns (not including fillings) ended up costing almost $2500.  It looks like the CF is only paying for $388 of the total.

My quesion is, is there some clause where the CF "pays for 90% of dental work, unless..."?
I pretty sure the CF will not pay for cosmetic work but I didn't think crowns (or fillings) were cosmetic.

Obviously I'm going to bring this to the BOR's attention but I was looking for any additional information or if someone has been in the same boat.

Cheers.

What you should have done is had the dentist send an estimate to the Insurance company which would have told you exactly how much they were going to pay and why.  Now you are SOL.

Does anyone know what is the max amount covered under class a dental plan?

Look under Human Ressources on the Forces Web Site.  There is a section dedicated to medical/dental coverage...

ref: The Canadian Forces Dental Care Plan Guide

Under part II, section 3(b)- It states:

For example, the Plan will reimburse you 50% of the costs for major restorative, major prosthodontic and orthodontic services (excluding diagnostic services in relation to orthodontia) and 90% for all other eligible services. You must pay the remainder.

In the same ref, it also mentions that if the cost if going to be more than $300. Get an apprasal first and forward it to the plan insurer for pre-approval before incurring costs. The ref also states the claim process for dependants and class A and class B reserves.
