Prime Minister Stephen Harper portrays a clueless cop in an upcoming episode of the Victorian-era detective series "Murdoch Mysteries."

Citytv says the prime minister makes the cameo appearance in an episode that airs July 20.

The story centres on the murder of a former defence minister and a mysterious letter signed by Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. MacDonald.

Harper plays desk Sgt. Armstrong, "a seemingly imperceptive man" who doesn't recognize then-prime minister Wilfrid Laurier when he walks into the police station.

"Murdoch Mysteries" stars Yannick Bisson as a detective who solves crimes with forensic techniques that were radical in the late 1800s.

Harper says it's his favourite show and that he enjoyed working with the cast "as an amateur."

Harper's scene was shot Oct. 15, 2010 and directed by Bisson ....
