A tattoo should say something about you - if you don‘t even know what you want, it is probably best not to bother.
It used to be that only soldiers, sailors and bikers go tattoos. Nowadays, any teenager with 100 bucks of allowance money runs out and gets one - the whole thing has turned into a colossal joke.
It used to be the fashion in my regiment to get Scottish thistles on our left legs, just above where our hosetop would end and below the hem of the kilt when we wore ceremonial dress. It was part of the uniform, and set one apart since it was such an unusual spot to get one done.
Now everyone from bike couriers to homeless kids have tattooed legs. I think the majority of tattoos today are unsightly and most are meaningless. I keep hoping the fad will die out.
As far as military tattoos - surely you can do better than the Canadian Army insignia -the maple leaf, crown and sword supposedly have some history - but the badge itself is actually quite new. If you really must, get a regimental badge, or crossed rifles, or something with some history. And if you don‘t belong to a regiment, don‘t get one of the "branch" badges as they only date back to unification in the late 1960s and have equally as little history as the new maple leaf Army badge.
