I know Canadians who have joined the USMC. They all report that everything there is spoonfed to them, and aimed at your basic ghetto slug with a grade 3 education. My understanding, too, is that training is very specialized - you may be trained to drive a tank, for example, but if it breaks down, you won‘t know how to fix it. Canadian drivers, to continue the example, learn basic maintenance and theory of all the parts of their vehicles before learning to drive them. The same would apply, I suppose, to any other trade anyone might be interested in.

The US forces don‘t seem to present much of a challenge to your average bright Canadian never mind the rah rah TV commercials. Bear in mind, this is from someone with no experience in the US military. If I‘m wrong, maybe someone can correct me.

As for history books - I presume you mean "Social Studies" which is the perverted form of history they teach in schools these days. Bookstores and public libraries are wonderful things, and you will find many good books on Canadian subjects. Read Pierre Berton‘s "Vimy", or Farley Mowat‘s "And No Birds Sang" for starters - then move on to Desmond Mortons‘ "When Your Number is Up". If you‘re interested in WWII uniforms, read MY book... You have no excuse for not knowing your own country‘s history. Blaming it on a lack of cable TV or laziness doesn‘t cut it. If you don‘t know where to start, well, I just suggested a couple of places. I‘m sure the others here could suggest more. I‘ll add that you can give The Valour and the Horror a very wide berth.

So basically, if you want to excel amongst a bunch of underachievers you‘re a lot smarter than, please, join the US Armed Forces. If you want to truly learn a trade, join the CF. And whatever you do, take the time to learn about your own country‘s history. You owe the guys who died overseas at least that much.

Ment by the snide remarks to my history books is the fact that until up to grade 9 I was learning about
american history. For christ sake, I‘m canadian, therefore I should learn about canadian things.
Ive requested since grade 8 to learn canadian war history, but i have to resort to finding the information on myself.
I thank you for the book title also.

Don‘t be so negative Michael, There‘s something to be gleaned from the Valour and the Horror. What is your website address?

There are times when it is most fortunate for me that this medium of communication is somewhat diffussed and surpressed so that the emotional levels that are immediately felt when reading it are reduced to a verbal rebuttal.

I was a stupid, young funny how those two words go so well together Canadian that had been fed the American pap that currently feeds the bulk of Canadian youth and without thought about the ramifications went south of the border in 1970, lied about everything age, place of birth, et al and got me a job with the US Army. Took the Americans almost four and a half years before they caught up with the bull that I had spread and pulled me out of an operational theatre to do it, threatened me with Leavenworth the Federal prison and cut me loose. A sad and sorry tale, eh? not really sad or sorry I would do it different if I had another chance!!.

I resent the remarks that the US military is a group of underachievers that specialize to the extreme. It is with honour and pride that I have served two of the three countries in North America and while both have their respective drawbacks, both have reasons for their successes...their Soldiers.

Don‘t be stupid...take a long, hard look at what you can do with the gift that you have that being youth and all that it entails and THEN go out and make a horses‘ *** of yourself. At least you will do it with the knowledge that it was an honest try and that you will learn from the experience.

All the Best
