The C2 is an updated Leopard 1A5, which was developed in Germany in the 1980s. This tank deploys with a crew of four, including a commander, a driver, a gunner and a radio operator/loader. The 105-mm L7A3 gun is capable of engaging targets day and night, while on the move under adverse weather conditions, through the use of a fully stabilized fire control system with an integrated thermal imaging system and laser range-finder. The Leopard C2 Tank is also fitted with a gunner’s secondary fire control system and a commander’s fire control system. It has two 7.62-mm C6 machine guns. One is mounted inside the turret and another can be mounted externally on either the commander's or the loader's station.

Spall liners have been added to the refurbished Leopard 1A5 turrets to increase crew protection — slightly reduced interior room being considered an acceptable trade-off. Protection was further improved by the application of add-on MEXAS composite armour panels. But, the Leopard C2’s EMES18 fire-control system with its thermal night sights made the biggest tactical difference. [http://www.sfu.ca/casr/101-vehleo2.htm]

The Leopard C2 tank is also fitted with two banks of four smoke grenade launchers on the turret. The tank may be “sealed-off” against nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) threats. It is a minimum-maintenance armoured fighting vehicle and complete replacement of the engine and transmission is possible in 30 minutes under field conditions. When properly fitted with a conning tower, it is capable of deep-fording or submerged fording where riverbanks are prepared for exit and entry.

The DND has said that it is replacing the Leopard C2 "with a new direct fire system that includes ... three platforms”. All three platforms are LAV III-based – MGS, a new anti-armour TUA TOW missile launcher, and a new dual-use anti-armour/anti-aircraft ‘Multi Mission Effects Vehicle’ using ADATS missiles.[http://www.sfu.ca/casr/101-vehleo.htm]

Canadian Forces Land Force Command (LFC) is responsible for army operations within the Canadian Armed Forces. LFC maintains bases across Canada and is responsible for the largest component of the Canadian Forces Reserves — the Army Reserve, often referred to as the "militia".

LFC is the descendant of the Canadian Army which was the name of Canada's land forces from 1940 until February 1, 1968. At the time of unification all army units were placed under Force Mobile Command (FMC) with the name being changed to Land Force Command in a 1990s reorganization of the Canadian Forces.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_army]

== General ==
The Canadian Armoured Corps was created during the Second World War to administer the growing number of armoured regiments being created. The Corps was granted the "Royal" prefix in 1945. Canada first employed armour in the First World War with the creation of three tank battalions in 1918. In 1936, the first tank regiments were created, at that time part of the Infantry, until the creation of the CAC.

Since the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps has continued to evolve in response to Canada's defence and security needs, and has employed units in pure armour as well as reconnaissance roles.

==== Role of Armour ====

To defeat the enemy through the aggressive use of firepower and battlefield mobility.

==== Motto of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps ====
"Through the mud and the blood to the green fields beyond."<br />
[[Image:9mm.jpg|right|thumb|250px|The 9mm pistol is compact and easily used in enclosed spaces such as tunnels or during house clearing.]]
The Browning Hi-Power is based on a semi-automatic 9mm pistol conceived and patented in the United States in 1922 by American John Browning, who eventually took his ideas to Belgium and the arms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. The design was fully developed and realized through the efforts of Belgian arms designer Dieudonne Saive working at FN. This pistol was noted for having the first functional double-column magazine of 9mm Parabellum rounds, capable of holding 13 cartridges, and allowing a 14th loaded in the chamber. (Modern "flush fit" magazines are now available which hold 15 cartridges allowing a 16th to be loaded in the chamber, and magazines which extend beyond the grip can hold considerably more.)

The Browning 9mm was made the standard sidearm of Canadian soldiers in late 1944, replacing the standard issue .38 revolver.

The Browning 9-mm pistol is carried by officers and soldiers who require a sidearm that can be rapidly drawn and fired, even in confined spaces. The pistol consists of a barrel, a slide, a breech block, a frame, and a 13 round magazine.

[[Image:KevonpatrolwRCMP.jpg|right|400px]]

The C7A2 was a "mid-life" service upgrade - albiet done on the LCMM - SA's (Life Cycle Material Manager Small Arms) meager budget.

The [[C7A1]] had been criticised especially by [[Princess Patrcia's Canadian Light Infantry|1VP]] in Kosovo as being cumbersome, and very awkward to adapt to nigth operations. Such that members where oftem stuck with a pistol during some operations since in body armour they could not effectively use the C7A1 with its fixed buttstock. A Coy 1PPCLI had been lent a number of KAC (Knights Armament Company) M5RAS (Rail Accessory System) that provided an aluminum M1913 Picatiny rail handguard for the attachment of flashlights and Infra-Red lasers (at that point the Insight PAC4A and B). Similarily a large quantity of the C79 ELCAN scopes where N/S due to wear (or poor design) so something was going to have to be done about the Forces principle small arm.

==C7A1 w/M5RAS==
The time frame coninsided with the fact the USMC had recently released a requirement for the M16A4 - which was effectively a M16A2 with a flatop receiver (a la C7A1) with a M5 RAS, the US Army had decided that they required a shorter modular weapon and had ordered full scale transition from the M16A2 to the M4 (and M4A1 for SOF).

For reasons that still baffles the land force the LCMM and Diemaco quoted the Army $834.93 for each M5 RAS when the Army went to consider a modular handguard section. Having seen the memo from KAC to Diemaco (right of first refusal on small arms contracts) the CF was to pay $220 USD -- or at then current rate of exchange $305 Cdn (FOB Vero Beach Fla.) The Army balked (and ignored the testing that had lead to the SOPMOD RIS/RAS) and adopted the Diemaco designed TRIAD-1 (or pitchfork as I like to call it).

==TRIAD-1==
{|align="center"
|align="center"|[[Image:TRIAD.jpg|300px]]
|align="center"|[[Image:M203PAC.jpg|300px]]
|-
|colspan="2" align="center"|TRIAD not compatible with Canadian M203 as PAC/PEQ must be moved to a different mount.
|}

Due to both budgetary and the desire of the [[Royal Canadian Infantry Corps|Infantry Corps]] RSM for rifle drill (not SMG drill) the 20" barrel was retained - despite the desire and recomendations of the soliders that had been deployed to Kosovo to adopt a flatop version of the C8 for Infantry usage.

As well despite soldiers desiring a more robust scope that the C79 a program was put to replace them with the C79A2 effectively the same scope that has an upgraded mount available in civilian circles. No effrot was made to obtain a Close Combat Optic that the US and Allies had been leaning to since the Somalia conflict.

Then several addtions where decided upon in order to make the weapon easier on left handed firers. A modified version of the Norgon Ambi-Catch was added to the mag could be released from either side of the weapon, however for reasons unaware the Diemaco version had less of an engagement surface and was easily bumped and the mag would fall out -- After speaking with Robert Garrett president of Norgon LLC he went to Diemaco and corrected their error. Apparently someone had thought with less engagement surface it woudl make for faster reloads...

A "tactical" charging handle was added - the idea was that left handed personnel could charge the weapon easier without removing their hand from the pistol grip this way -- however it was a large piece of metal that stuck out from the weapon -- getting tangled and bent often.

When 3PPCLI returned from Afghanistan with the first "real" combat deployment since Korea a number of weapon modication recomondations where made specifically to adopt the C8SFW en masse for the Infantry.

In DLR 5-5 Maj Louis DeSoussa was listening however he had a limited budget and a LCMM that beleived he knew better.

So for Roto0 Op Athena many C8's where made avialable for the Infantry and supporting personnel in the form of a C8A1 (flattop C8)
AND Maj D had ordered the C8A1's from Diemaco with an added perk - the EOTECH HDS (holographic difraction sight) (a close combat optic that had been in use with Canadian SOF very sucessfully for the past few years)

Roto2 Op Athena was the first widescale issue of the C7A2 -
*the green furniture was not the right choice for desert warfare
*the 20" barrel was not appreciated
*The TRIAD had numerous problems
*etc.

Currently the idea is to tranfrom the Land Force to the C7A2 and the Infantry units and supporting trades will recieve the C8FTHB (Flatop heavy barrel - effectively a C8SFW without the KAC M4RAS)

{|
|[[Image:C8FTHB.jpg|350px]]
|[[Image:C8toSFW.jpg|400px|thumb|C8A1 versus C8SFW.]]
|}

What the end state was
*C8
*C8A1
*C8SFW
*C7A2
The C2 is an updated Leopard 1A5, which was developed in Germany in the 1980s.

Leopard C2 TankThe Leopard C2 is also fitted with two banks of four smoke grenade launchers on the turret.

The Leopard C2 was designed so it can be fitted with add-on armour and all of the new battlefield sensing and communication systems the Army plans to introduce over the next few years. There are 114 in service.

The Coyote is a vital component of the army’s leading-edge battlefield systems. This highly mobile, well-armed and well-protected reconnaissance variant of the Light Armoured Vehicle family is employed in the conduct of battlefield reconnaissance and surveillance missions at the battlegroup and brigade levels. Incorporating both radar and a variety of electro-optic sensors, the Coyote surveillance system provides an all-weather, day and night observation capability. The Coyote is in use with the Army’s six mechanized infantry battalions, the three armour regiments and their respective schools.

The most innovative aspect of the Coyote is its surveillance system, designed to detect hostile forces using a combination of day camera, radar, thermal imaging, and laser range-finding equipment.

Designed to operate in the world's hot spots, the Coyote is armed and armoured to fulfil its mission. The ballistic-steel hull protects against small-arms fire, mines and high-explosive airbursts. Add-on armour protects against larger projectiles. The two-man electric-drive turret is equipped with a laser-warning receiver. A fully stabilized 25-mm chain gun provides light assault firepower. On roads the vehicle's maximum speed is 100 km/h, with a maximum range of 660 km. It can deploy quickly to an area accessible by roads or trails, and then continue cross-country. A mast-equipped version of the vehicle raises its surveillance gear 10 m above the ground to see hostile forces over obstacles and from protected positions.

This fast, well-armed LAV III is a state-of-the-art troop carrier that will serve the needs of mounted infantry well into the new century. The vehicle is well protected and can be used day and night, in all weather conditions, in battlefield smoke and on most types of terrain. Capable of speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour on roads, the LAV III will give the commander many more options in both combat and non-combat situations. For example the commander may choose to keep the troops mounted and protected while using the 25-mm stabilized cannon — an option not available in the past. The driver and the commander have display terminals for the Tactical Navigation System (TACNAV), as well as thermal viewers. The TACNAV links a Global Positioning System (GPS) with a digital magnetic compass and laser range finder. Good anti-mine performance and an automatic fire and explosion suppression system provide additional safety for the crew. When used as an infantry section carrier, the LAV III deploys with a vehicle commander, a gunner, a driver and seven infantry soldiers. When deployed as a Tactical Command Post, it carries six soldiers. Three other variants are being procured including a Forward Observation Officer (FOO), TOW Under Armour (TUA) and an Engineer variant.

Leopard C2 TankThe Leopard C2 is also fitted with two banks of four smoke grenade launchers on the turret.

The Leopard C2 was designed so it can be fitted with add-on armour and all of the new battlefield sensing and communication systems the Army plans to introduce over the next few years. There are 114 in service.

*25-mm stabilized M242 chain gun
*7.62-mm stabilized coaxial machine gun
*7.62-mm top-turret mounted machine gun
To see different ways of using Wiki code, check out some pages at http://www.wikipedia.org or on this wiki - you don't need to make any changes, just open up any page with the Edit tab at the top of the screen and you can examine the code. They also have a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox "Sandbox"] at wikipedia where you can try out code just to see how stuff works.
Bear in mind that other wiki sites may use "scripts" - generally identified by the {{}} brackets - that may or may not work on the army.ca wiki.

Simple questions on wiki formatting may be directed to [[User talk:Michael Dorosh]] and other volunteers as they become available. To leave a question, just click the "+" symbol to the right of the edit tab to start a new section on the talk page, type your question, then hit SAVE PAGE. To continue discussion of an older question, click <nowiki>[edit]</nowiki> at the top of the section, type your question, then click the SAVE PAGE button below the edit window.
