All Corps of the Canadian Land Force Command belong to one of three arms: The Combat Arms, the Combat Support Arms, or the Service Support Arms. The following Corps/Branches are of the Combat Arms:
* Artillery
* Armour
* Engineers
* Infantry

Historical
Before 1940, The Cavalry was also considered one of the Combat Arms; mechanization begun in the 1930s and completed in the first year of the Second World War led to the replacement of the Cavalry with Armour.

From 1936 to 1940, tanks were considered a branch of the Infantry.

From 1916 to 1936 The Canadian Machine Gun Corps was also considered a separate Combat Arm distinct from both the Artillery and the Infantry. In 1936 the CMGC had its units integrated into the Infantry.
DEFINITION
Military Engineering is that engineer activity undertaken, regardless of component or service, to shape the physical operating environment.' Military Engineering incorporates support to manoeuvre and to the force as a whole, including military engineering functions such as engineer support to Force Protection, Counter - Improvised Explosive Devices, Environmental Protection, Engineer Intelligence and Military Search. Military Engineering does not encompass the activities undertaken by those 'engineers' who maintain, repair and operate vehicles, vessels, aircraft, weapon systems and equipment.
(NATO publication MC 0560 "MILITARY COMMITTEE POLICY FOR MILITARY ENGINEERING" 01 Apr 2008.)

Role
The mission of the Canadian Military Engineers is to contribute to the survival, mobility, and combat effectiveness of the Canadian Forces. Roles are to conduct combat operations, support the Canadian Forces in war and peace, support national development, provide assistance to civil authorities, and support international aid programs. Engineers serve wherever the need arises, proud of the motto Ubique (Everywhere). Few other organizations, civilian or military, can claim to have contributed as much to the defence and development of this nation as have the Canadian Military Engineers. (CF publication A-JS-007-003/JD-001 "Customs and Traditions of the CME")

History of the CME
In the most modern sense Canada first had its own military engineers from 1903 and the creation of the Canadian Engineer Corps. Several name changes occurred in the 20th Century, and the Canadian Military Engineers (CME) were so designated in 1967 during the process of Unification of the three armed services in Canada into an integrated military, which became official on 1 February 1968. In the most modern sense Canada first had its own military engineers from 1903 and the creation of the Canadian Engineer Corps. Canadian military engineers actually date back to before Confederation, and so the Branch Birthday is celebrated on the anniversary of the uniting of both the regular engineers and the Militia engineers under the same title and cap badge in 1936.

A unit of Engineers is called a Regiment, and is composed of subunits called Squadrons. Each Engineer regiment identifies with the Canadian Military Engineers.

Units are generally identified by a number; independent subunits also exist (squadrons not assigned to a specific regiment).

Combat Engineer Regiment
The Combat Engineer Regiment (CER) is the standard engineer unit within Canadian brigades. Tradittionally these units have been organized along the lines of two field squadrons (of two field troops each), a support squadron, and an administration squadron. Recent changes are changing the regiments to four field squadrons (of one field troop and one support troop) and an administration squadron. The intent of this change is to ensure there is one field squadron affiliated to each of the brigades manouvre units (armour and infantry).

Field Engineer Regiment
The Field Engineer Regiment (FER) was a divisional close support engineering unit. These units were formed shortly after the Second World War but when 1 FER was disbanded in 1958 the only remaining FERs were in the reserve force. Today many of these units are choosing to re-name themselves as CERs in order to better resemble the regular force.

Engineer Support Regiment
The Engineer Support Regiment (ESR) is a divisional general support engineering unit. While Canada does not have any divisions, it still retains an ESR in order to provide higher level engineering capabilities which cannot be provided by the CERs.
The Canadian Military Engineers is the name given to the Engineering Branch of the Canadian Forces. The CME includes Combat Engineers, Construction Engineers, Fire Fighters, and Mapping & Charting Engineers.

The Canadian Military Engineers is the name given to the Engineering Branch of the Canadian Forces. The CME includes Combat Engineers, Construction Engineers, Fire Fighters, and Mapping & Charting Engineers.

Strategic Advisory Team – Afghanistan (SAT – A)
Since September 2005 the Canadian Forces has, on a bi-lateral basis, provided a mixed military-civilian team of 15 strategic planners to assist the Government of Afghanistan. This team is focussed on the provision of planners to Afghanistan's National Development Strategy Working Group and to the Public Administration Reform effort. In both activities the Strategic Advisory Team - Afghanistan (SAT-A) has planners embedded in Government of Afghanistan offices. Their primary role is to work with Afghan counter-parts in the design of the strategic plans necessary to guide the international UN mandated nation-building effort in Afghanistan. In short, the team brings military strategic planning skills to bear on the resolution of complex civil problems.

Chronology of Canadian participation in the campaign against terrorism
Since October 2001, Canada has deployed over 20 warships and more than 16,000 sailors, soldiers and air force personnel in the international campaign against terrorism.

Operation APOLLO
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington, Canada made a significant military commitment to the campaign against terrorism to demonstrate solidarity with our allies and our resolve to improve international security.

On October 8, 2001, the then Minister of National Defence Art Eggleton announced the departure of the first CF units to join the international campaign against terrorism. A Naval Task Group of four ships deployed to the Persian (Arabian) Gulf under Operation APOLLO was deployed.

In February 2002, the 3 PPCLI Battle Group commanded by then Lieutenant-Colonel Pat Stogran deployed to Kandahar for a six-month tour of duty that included tasks ranging from airfield security to combat. This mission received airlift support from a Tactical Airlift Detachment, later named the Theatre Support Element (TSE), which was located in Southwest Asia.

For more information on Operation APOLLO visit http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/operations/Apollo/index_e.htm.

Operation ALTAIR
Operation ALTAIR, which began in October 2003, consisted of warships deployed individually to operate with U.S. carrier strike groups in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf region. The Halifax-class patrol frigate Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto deployed with the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group from January to July 2004. In April 2005, HMCS Winnipeg deployed for six months with the 5th Fleet of the United States Navy.

For more information on Operation ALTAIR visit http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/operations/altair/index_e.asp

Conclusion
In its participation in ISAF and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Canada’s overarching goal in Afghanistan is to prevent it from relapsing into a failed state that gives terrorist and terrorist organizations a safe haven.

Canadian efforts in Afghanistan have contributed significantly to the overall consolidation of peace and the improvement of human security in the region. The next phase of Canadian operations in Afghanistan will continue to help improve the quality of life for the Afghan people, and to ensure that the progress made is sustainable.

While Canada remains committed to the rebuilding of democracy in Afghanistan, there are significant risks involved in these types of operations. Both the Canadian Forces and the Government have demonstrated their preparedness for the ongoing mission in Afghanistan; on 17 May 2006 the House of Commons approved an extension of the mission into 2009.

The enrollment process for the Canadian Forces begins with the Initial Application. Some specialist trades and entry plans, as well as the Reserve Force, have variations or additional steps that must be completed. Your local Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre is your best resource for determining the exact enrollment process applicable to your desired occupation or interests.

The standard Regular Force Application Process contains the following primary elements:

CF Application
The CF Application is a formal document which includes elements such as:
- General Candidate Information (Name, DOB, address, contact information)
- Citizenship
- Criminal History
- Academic History
- Work & Volunteer Experience
- Activities & Interests
- Supervisory & Leadership Experience

As well, this is where you will indicate your preferred:
- Component (Regular, Reserve, CIC or Health Reserve)
==- Element (Navy, Army, Air Force)
- Trade

You may select only one component, and only one preferred Element.
You may select up to three (minimum one) trades. You are not required to select more than one trade, and may be offered a trade outside of these initial preferences.

CFAT
The Canadian Forces Aptitude Test.

Interview
An interview with a military career counselor to discuss your choices, background and interests in an effort to better assess your suitability for enrollment in the CF.

Medical
A general physical exam and medical history is conducted.

Evaluations of Applications
For NCMs, applications are Merit-listed based on a comprehensive scoring system and offers are made accordingly and as vacancies and course openings provide.
For Officers, depending on trade and entry plan, various Officer Selection Boards meet and evaluate candidates for selection.

Additionally, if you are re-enrolling in the Forces, additional steps may be required:

Verfication of Former Service (VFS)
Medical Files Forwarding
Lieutenant-Colonel Stuart J. Sharpe was born in Iserlohn, Germany in October 1962 and joined the Canadian Forces in 1980. He attended Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean from 1980 to 1985, graduating with a baccalaureate in business administration. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, he joined 1 PPCLI in Calgary, Alberta as a mechanized rifle platoon commander.

He subsequently served as a rifle platoon commander in 2 PPCLI, Germany, and on promotion to Captain in 1988 was posted to the Infantry School in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe returned to regimental duty with 1 PPCLI in 1992. During this period of regimental service he was employed in various command and staff positions, he participated in UN operations in Croatia in 1994 and commanded a rifle company in NATO operations in Kosovo in 1999.

After attending Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in 2001, he was posted to the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group and assumed the responsibilities of the J3 Plans in the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters in Kingston. Promoted to his current rank in January 2003 he completed his tour with the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters, leading the operations planning branch as the J5. During his tour with the Joint Operations Group, Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe was deployed on NATO operations in Macedonia, to HQ JTFSWA in Tampa, Florida in 2002, and most recently to Kabul, Afghanistan as the Chief of Staff for the Canadian Forces Theatre Activation Team during the summer of 2003.
Lieutenant Colonel W.D. Eyre was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan, in 1966, and spent most of his youth on a nearby farm before completing high school in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He attended Royal Roads Military College in Victoria followed by Royal Military College in Kingston, graduating in 1988.

After completing infantry officer's training, LCol Eyre was posted to 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, where he served as a rifle platoon commander, including a peacekeeping tour in Cyprus, and as the reconnaissance platoon commander second-in-command.

Following employment as the Adjutant of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, he returned to 2 PPCLI and spent two and a half years as the unit’s reconnaissance platoon commander. In this position he deployed with 2 PPCLI to Croatia in 1993 as part of the United Nations Protection Force, and was in the Medak Pocket operation with the platoon.

After attending the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College he was employed as a staff officer in Land Force Western Area Headquarters, in both the G1 branch and as Executive Assistant to the Commander. He was subsequently selected by the Marines to attend the USMC School of Advanced Warfighting for the following year, a course focused on developing operational planners. On return to Canada he was employed as a section head in the Directorate of Defence Analysis at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, where he led the team that developed the Canadian Forces’ first Strategic Operating Concept. He became Commanding Officer of 3 PPCLI in June of 2004.
Aside from a distinct name, every unit in the CF has its own numbered code which is used in official correspondence. As well, each unit has an official short title (abbreviation), most often seen on combat clothing but also used in correspondence.

Here is a general descriptor of how the army is structured. Don't get too caught in the numbers though. Sections will vary in size. Platoons may be short sections (or may have extra sections). Regular Force infantry battalions only have three rifle companies these days (as opposed to the traditional four) and many reserve regiments only have one company.

Note that generally the "rule of three" gives you a rough estimate of what an element can be broken down in to (ie: 3 sections to a platoon, 3 platoons to a company, 3 companies to a battalion, etc, etc). However, that rule of three typically breaks down when you try to apply it to support elements or combined arms groups.

The dot/line/x system is the NATO standard designation used in conjuction with map symbols.

. - Detachment, Crew or fireteam
Two to four soldiers. This could be a vehicle crew, a sniper team, an engineer firing party, or something else which is tiny.

.. - Section
A section normally numbers about 8-10 men and is commanded by a Sgt with a MCpl as second in command.

... - Platoon or Troop
A platoon is a basic building block of sub-unit organizations. They are headed by a junior officer (2Lt to Capt) and number about 30 to 45 members. They consist of 3 or 4 sections (depending on the Arm) plus additional detachments as necessary (ie an infantry platoon Weapons Det). A Tank Troop would consist of 4 battle tanks.

l - Company
A company is considered a sub-unit and is the building block of "unit" sized organizations. They are commanded by Majors (referred to as Officer Commanding, or OC) and consist of a headquarters and 2 to 4 platoons (or troops). An Artillery sub-unit is refered to as a Battery, and the Armoured, Engineers and Signals refer to their sub-units as squadrons.

ll - Batallion
The Battalion is the standard sized "unit" of the Army. The Artillery, Armoured, Engineers, and Signals refer to thier units as Regiments. Tactical Aviation refers to its units as squadrons. Units are commanded by a commanding officer (typically a LCol). In some rare cases, smaller organizations may be given the designation of "unit" (but they would still use the map designator of their smaller size).

As for the Infantry Battalion structure, it's usually 3 to 4 rifle companies in addition to combat support company which used to comprise of 1 x mortar platoon, 1x Recce Platoon, 1 x Anti-Armour Platoon, 1 x Pioneer Platoon (things like mortars and pioneers have been phased out of the current structure). There's also a HQ company which has a Battalion CP, Int Detachment, MP Detachment and a Sigs Platoon. There's a Logistical Company comprising of Battalion stores, payroll, maintenance, cooks and the like.

lll - Regiment
Common for Soviet and WWII German forces in which a Regiment was a fighting formation. A Regiment typically consists of three to four battalions under the command of a Col.

(This should not be confused with the term "regiment" as it is used in commonwealth armies. Those Canadian regiments which are larger than one unit are still not formations. PPCLI, RCR, R22R, RNBR, etc will never deploy under a regimental headquarters. They will always be battalions as part of a Bde. For this reason you won't see Canadian units marked as Regiments on a map. The same is true of most of our allies.)

x - Brigade
A Brigade typically consists of three to four battalions under the command of a BGen. Brigades lack sufficient resources to conduct independent operations. They must operate within a division and they are dependant on division troops for support.

In Canada we have Brigade Groups, which are slightly larger than brigades and include brigade troops (reconnaissance, artillery, engineers, signals, aviation, medical and logistics (including military police)). The term "Brigade Group" is often used to designate a combined arms Brigade. These formations are not dependant on divisional troops for support, and can be fought independent of a higher formation.

Canadian Mechanized Brigade Groups are typically composed of the following:
* 1x Headquarters / Signal Squadron
* 2 x Mechanized Infantry Battalions
* 1 x Light Infantry Battalion
* 1x Armoured Regiment (including a reconnaisance squadron)
* 1x Field Artillery Regiment
* 1x Engineer Regiment
* 1x Service Battalion (but it is technically not part of the CMBG)
* 1x Field Ambulance (but it is technically not part of the CMBG)
* 1x Military Police platoon

Canadian Brigade Groups (the title given to the reserve brigades) have no fixed organization and are primarily trainining organizations with a certain domestic operations capabilities (although this is changing too...). For example, one Res CBG may consists of a headquarters, two Armoured units, three Artillery units, five Infantry units, one Engineer sub-unit and three combat service support units. Other CBGs are totally different: it is really a geographic and administrative grouping rather than an operational one.

xx - Division
A division consists of 2 to 3 brigades (or 2 to 3 Regiments), plus division troops (reconnaissance, artillery, engineers, signals, aviation, medical and logistics (including military police)) commanded by a Major General.

There are currently no Divisions within the Canadian Army.

xxx - Corps
2+ divisions, plus corps troops (reconnaissance, artillery, engineers, signals, information/electronic warfare, aviation, medical and logistics (including military police))commanded by a Lieutenant General

xxxx - Army
2+ corps

xxxxx - Army Group or Theater Command
