The CAF has created a number of generic occupation groupings such as: ANY, ATR, OPS GEN, AIRGEN, SEAGEN, CBTA...etc. These occupation groups bring together occupations of similar training, education, experience, and/or area of employment.  The majority of CAF establishment positions and tasks are assigned a specific occupation, but some are assigned an occupation group.  CAF members and officers are employed in positions and tasks to which the individual's occupation is a match for either the position's occupation or occupation group.

Every member of the Canadian Forces is enrolled into an occupation. Non-commissioned occupations, often referred to as trades, are the skilled backbone of the military who execute the physical tasks to get operations done. Commissioned officer occupations are the mid to senior or level leaders of the military.
