Subordinate officers are those members who are enrolled in the Canadian Forces as an Officer but who do not hold Her Majesty's Commission.

They hold the rank of Officer Cadet (for the Army and Air Force) or Naval Cadet (Navy).

All new officers are enrolled at the rank of Officer Cadet, though in some cases immediate promotions are made effective on the same day. For the vast majority, however, the standard practice is that new officers must demonstrate leadership potential and proficiency in basic military skills through the completion of the IAP/BOTP phase of initial officer training before receicing a commission and being promoted forward to the rank of Second Lieutenant.
