Harsh international reaction might incite Israel to let loose its ground forces, as it may feel it is already paying the price of escalation without having escalated.

I must admit I don't quite understand all the fuss about ground invasion. Israel's self-defense is justified and it is not self-evident that it should be limited to air strikes, and it seems to me that ground troops can bring to bear kinetic effects that are much less indiscriminate than bombings.
