Canada/US Border Integrity Thread

Although 'Black Helicopters' kinda play into the hands of the conspiracy theorists ;)

You call them conspiracy theorists, we call them job security. To be fair, they also see a conspiracy behind every rainbow decaled RCMP aircraft.

How come the RCMP can have Blackhawks but the CF can't ?
Firstly, the RCMP don't "have" Blackhawks. They are renting them along with the aircrew to operate them. Secondly, I'd bet that the lessor has built performance and mission specification safeguards for both the equipment and crews into the contract to ensure both are useable by the next lessee at the conclusion of this contract. You won't see that in a CAF airframe or aircrew due to unlimited liability.

As someone stated upthread, this could also be a GoC test drive of the Blackhawk airframe in Canada to see if it's a viable replacement for the Griffon. But, we don't own them, yet.

It could be a test drive of the BH airframe, but this all happened so quickly I doubt the GoC had that much foresight.

Sure, the BH's performance & maintenance needs will be observed now, and it's future viability more easily considered. But our current GoC was already falling apart at the seems BEFORE Trump made the threats that he did...this sudden leasing of the Blackhawks is just a knee jerk reaction by Justin.

(I will say tho, the paint job on these RCMP Blackhawks is NIICCCEEEE!)

That statement right there is ridiculous. Not you saying it, but if its true.

The idea that we need to test drive a helicopter that's been in production and use by allies for decades is part of our problem. For F sakes it works, buy it.

Are you even the least bit familiar with how our current government works? If you want to disqualify something.....

I doubt DND was even asked. It was Public Safety Canada leasing a capability of X pax and Y cargo over Z kms. If the RCMP wanted to surge its PC-12 fleet temporarily, it would do the same thing, lease the (additional) airframes.

I'll be curious to see if the cost of this new capability ends up being worth the results, or if that money would be better used elsewhere in the future...

Yes a Blackhawk can carry a full team of officers at a decent speed & decent distance. There is no doubt it adds a reinforced presence to the border, and it looks good doing it.

But it'll be curious to break down the actual numbers.

We could buy 2 or 3 medium helicopters from Bell for the price of a single 'hawk, so it'll be interesting to see if we decide to keep this added capacity once the lease is up OR buy 3 to 6 additional helicopters instead.

It’s Vote 1 O&M. Vote 1 doesn’t get “better used elsewhere in the future.”

Did it help over the duration of the lease? If yes, the. It was worth it.

This can be potentially very bad for us. If it comes out that the Officer was killed by someone transporting illegal migrants who had crossed into the US, Trump will definitely use this against us as another sign of the lack of enforcement on the US-Canada border.

That was fast.

The other one was up over Quebec and Ontario yesterday, I saw it on Flightradar coming back in early afternoon. Interesting that carrying ERT seems to be the starting posture.

Not as bad as for the Agent involved, of course.

OK, I'm guessing there's got to be more than this than meets the headline, so to speak, but as a fat old civvy observer, I still have to ask, "Wuh?"

I can sympathize with needing to gear up quickly, especially during the more manic pre-response phase to POTUS47-elect's threats, but if entirely true, yikes ....

This is not new information. This has been warned about for years in the open. Typical Canada not listening or reading the room (or the many documents on this subject for that matter).
