Arrests at anti-Israel/Anti-NATO protest in Montreal

Isn't that in joly's riding? I thought for sure the change in foreign policy based off a small voting base would calm things down....

Madame Joly seemed oblivious of the events in Montreal last night at the Henry House. She and the Canadian ambassador to Washington and about 12 other hangers on were having a great time. Smiles, giggles, war stories and expense accounts all over the room.

I recall another time when something like that happened ;)

I would suggest that “not publicly mentioning” =/= oblivious to a situation.

Here’s the Gazette’s story on it. Looks like a pretty typical nrief and angry Montreal protests where some shitheads stay around and get criminally stupid after an initial lawful march. Three were arrested last night.

This is coordinated with much larger and peacefully student walkouts in Quebec. Protests over Gaza won’t be going away any time soon. We’ll see how long SPVN stays patient with this nonsense.

I know Ottawa Police have shifted their approach in the past week and have begun to much more firmly clamp down on the applicable bylaws in the face of these protests, eg no sound systems, forcing crowds to stay on the sidewalks. That led to a dust up between protesters and OPS with four arrested last week.

Separate from protest events that either stay lawful or evolve into criminality, there’s also been an uptick in ‘direct actions’, eg vandalism targeted at those perceived to be supporting Israel.

I don’t see this whole thing simmering down any time soon.

Particularly when parts of the government are sympathetic to their cause, whether it's genuine or just a desire to secure the "ethnic" vote.

Nobody anywhere is turning down the heat on their respective burners, and Israel’s going to have pretty much free rein from the next U.S. administration. This will continue to get more inflamed.

Certainly there are some dangerous Palestinians in Canada working to promote their cause. Yet I wonder if the majority of the rioters are actually Palestinians or anarchists who are out to tear down the establishment. Decades ago at a colleague’s party in Toronto, I was once introduced to a guy who described himself as an anarchist. He was the kind of guy who would walk into the subway station and, rather than pay his fare, would hop over the turnstile and run to catch the train before the authorities could apprehend him. I remember him saying that if he saw a white man in a fight with a black man he would automatically, without question, join in the fight on the side of the black man against the white man (the anarchist himself was white). Yet if he saw one white man attacking another white man then he would not interfere at all.

Probably a mix. NATO and the arms industry are a pretty conventional target for the anarchist types. I suspect we’re seeing some overlap in the various affinity groups on the field, with some cross-pollination in tactics and surface level objectives.

Each probably hating the other but trying to use them for their own political benefit. Strange bedfellows.

And an ... intriguing mix at that - this from pro-ISR media ....

Absolutely disgusting. Perhaps a few high profile arrests and deportations of those who seek to destroy us.
I’m actually tired of accepting so called refugees who do nothing but turn on us.

And to think that Canada has agreed to accept far more Palestinian refugees than originally planned.
