Sperwan Ghar villagers treated to medical outreach, school re-opening

The Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), based at Camp Nathan Smith, conducted a village medical outreach patrol on Friday. ISAF soldiers also participated in a ceremony to mark the re-opening of a school in Sperwan on Saturday.
The village medical outreach was conducted at the front gate of Forward Operating Base Sperwan Ghar. The Kandahar PRT employed five local Afghan physicians and a dentist to conduct the medical treatment, in addition to providing all of the medical and hygiene supplies. The Afghan practitioners treated 197 men, women and children and the dentist extracted 11 teeth.
Following the medical outreach, patients received donated pens, pencils, stationery, toys, socks, shirts and hygiene items.
In attendance at Saturday’s Sperwan school re-opening were the Kandahar Deputy-Governor, Dr. Ghulam Jilani Humayoun, as well as the outgoing PRT Commander, Lt. Col. Simon Hetherington, and incoming PRT Commander, Lt. Col. Bob Chamberlain.
The school has been the site of a cash-for-work project to clean it and the grounds, to put desks and chairs back in the classrooms and to level the schoolyard.
“This is a significant step forward for the people of Sperwan,” said Warrant Officer Dean Henley, PRT Civil-Military Cooperation operator, who organized both of these events. “This shows that life is returning to normal here.”
