Goverment Rates, and Entilement!

Me and a couple of guys from my unit traveling from Montreal to Toronto on VIA rail got a nice discount. A 130$ ticket slashed to 91$

We stayed at the Delta Hotel in downtown Toronto overnight, and in a room that normally would cost 280$ we got for 130$.

Then we took a greyhound bus from Toronto to Meaford, and payed 55$ on a 90$ ticket.

Alll on military discount.

Note:  We wern't paying out of own money though.  We kept our recieps to get re-embursed by our unit.  It's good to save them a few bucks here and there.

We were on our way to Meaford for a course.

I'll preface this by saying I do not work for Bell in any way shape or form... ok, so BCE owns some stock in the company I work for, but thats it, I swear! :)

Bell Mobility has a DND/Military Plan.

It was designed specifically for military members, as it offers significant long distance advantages as compared to Bell's regular rates. AFAIK the other carriers do not offer this, and as a regular civilian, it would seem impossible to get the rate that I received when I was in the military.

I bring this up only because it could save some members of the CF significant funds.. again, you should always research your needs and all available options out there.

If you have questions about the plan, feel free to PM me and Ill let you know what I have... I don't want to turn this into too much of an advert.

Again, Bell gives corporate plans to all of the Fed Govnt for the most part... its cheaper rates plus a volume discount....

I never heard about this and when I asked Bell if it existed they said they had no clue, the only way I found out was by going toa retail store near a base (the other ones had no idea) who heard the question frequently and insisting that they check.

Often cell companies will tell you to check with your HR dept.. which in the military can be exceedingly difficult. :)

For standing offers the federal government has a website that lists the discounts federal (that includes military) employees are entitled to for accomodation and car rentals.   It does not, by far, include all discounts but it does include many larger car rental companies and hotel chains across the country and in the US as well.   Here is the link:

Dang, when I was taking VIA Rail from Toronto to Kingston the lady told me the military discount was only 5%.  :rage:

Often the discount is usually the equivalent of Student/Senior discounts...

Yeah, its strange, for my tickey back, my unit purchased it for us and had it waiting for us in Union Station in TO.  They paied full price, and when I asked the woman at the kiosk, she told us our unit could have asked for the military discount which was 10%....

Go figure.  The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing....
