A few other OCdt's and I are planning on heading to the Mess later tonight and we have a friend and he isn't a member of the forces. We are wondering if you are allowed to bring a guest. I've done some searching on the site and found mostly stuff relating to mess dinners.

Could anyone shed some light on this without my having to drive over and read the regs/ask the duty officer?

yes you can bring him/her as your guest but remember you responsible for there actions.

There is usually a Guest register or Guest Book that you have to sign them in along with who you are as host.

Just remember that he is to go over to the bar, and ring the bell.  It is to announce that a guest has arrived.

That's right. And, just in case people didn't hear it the first time, he should go back and ring it as hard as he can about every 20 minutes or so.

He will quickly become a very welcome guest.

Cheers

Surprisingly in RA park in CFB Halifax...that's quite feasible. The whole night I think maybe a total of 6-8 people wandered through counting ourselves. It was quite depressing...

Aside from ringing the bell (to announce his/her arrival), make sure he/she wears a ball cap too - It's tradition!

Your guest may also have to pay to get in.  Guests had to sign in and pay $2 at the jr ranks mess in Borden

In such circumstances, you should always insure that your guest has a substantial number of beer tokens on hand.,..

There's always a few regulars floating around every Thursday at RA Park, and the crud table is usually pretty busy. I've made a point to try and get out for a bit each Thursday, and to try and get some of the other subbies to come out as well.

I didn't get out at all since I commissioned last year, and I realise now I should have made the effort. Unfortunately, as our unit doesn't belong to the Bde, and we don't get out to the mess much, no one really knows us. As an Int Guy, a good chunk of my job is salesmanship. Its far better (and more fun!) to build a little mutual trust and understanding in the mess with officers from other units over a beer. Once you go on exercise, at least you're more of a 'known quantity'.

At any point you are interested in company in the Mess let me know, I always try to drag my fellows to the Mess. Though since nearly every Junior/Sub officer in my unit has children waiting at home under the age of one I rarely succeed and it feels plain sad to go it alone. That being said I'll be there tonight with one of my mates attempting to explain to him why a Mess is superior to the bar scene.

Assuming that you and your mate are young single males that should be an interesting (but probably futile) exercise.  Perhaps you should try out your argument here.  Having once been the VPMC of a Reg Force Officers Mess (that was a very short cab ride from the many delights of a major city's downtown) I am very familiar with the difficulty in finding the right attraction that will entice young subbies to make the mess their preferred entertainment destination.  Long gone is the desperation ploy of inviting students from hospital based nursing education programs (with their young single female filled residences) to a "meet and greet" in the mess.

There are a lot more male nursing students now than there used to be. I used to look at the old Nursing class photos on the walls of hospitals that I frequented. ( Not much else to do. ) I do not recall seeing any guys. But, times have changed.

I remember in "Tunes of Glory" when the officers invited the locals to a mess party. All seemed to go well until the two Colonels decided to ruin it with their conflict of personalities.
Have a good time, but not a great time.

If you are ever in town and "looking for a good time" on a Wednesday evening as a single guy, this is the place to be:

Click on "Events".

It is in the financial district. When the skycrapers start pouring out at 1600 you will see what I mean.  :)

There is one in Mississauga too!:

I went there once (Toronto Location) for a friends birthday and someone stole my leather jacket from the coat check. It definitely wasn't on a 911 Wednesday night though.... Other than that inconvenience, we enjoyed ourselves.

Hey, were you the guy escorting that dude who looked like a homeless person this evening? I saw what looked like a course t-shirt on him, but was confused by his sandals and waist-length hair.  >:D
