LPC leadership race - 2025

Oh sure, 'not enough time' ;)

…to isolate from her closeness with China during her tenure as BC Premier.

I think the CPC membership recollection gaff will be inappropriately saddled with the burden of being the main reason she didn’t enter the race.

Leger polling just out ...

Highlights from the horse's mouth (also archived here, with full report attached)
  • "Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party is currently leading by 26 points (an increase of 4 points since the last measure), ahead of Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party. If a federal election were held today, 47% of Canadians would vote for the Conservative Party of Canada, while 21% would vote for Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party. The NDP trail at 17%.
  • Among the potential successors to Justin Trudeau, Chrystia Freeland remains in the lead with 14% support, closely followed very closely by Mark Carney (13%). Mark Carney stands out among Liberal voters, with 27% support.
  • Almost half of Canadians (46%) believe that there should be a full leadership convention with Liberal party members voting to elect a new leader sometime around the end of March as opposed to the Liberal Caucus selecting a leader (35%).
  • Canadians are divided over the timing of the next election, with near a third wanting it to take place now (29%), another third this spring (30%), and another third in October 2025 (32%), as set out in fixed election date legislation.
  • Three quarters of Canadians (78%) are concerned about the government’s ability to manage the relationship with the incoming Trump administration in the current context, with the Canadian government in a transitional phase following Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation. Conservative voters (84%) are more likely to be concerned.
  • 82% of Canadians say they would not like Canada to join the United States and become the 51st state, while 11% would like for Canada to join the United States."
Deets on the polling:
This web survey was conducted from January 10 to January 13, 2024, with 1,545 Canadians aged 18 or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel. A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size yields a margin of error no greater than ±2.49%, (19 times out of 20) for the Canadian sample.

Ya I think the lie heard round the country this week kind of sealed her fate. What a tool.
It's kind of like Canadians are coming out of the daze they've been in and politicians are shocked they can't just shrug and laugh off boldly lying mispeaking. She really acted like it was no big deal. The only thing we were missing was her gaslighting us saying we heard her wrong.

She did. She said she misspoke.

Bullet dodged?
For Canada and the Liberals, I believe so. Sam Cooper (The Bureau Substack) has reported consistently on her close links with the CCP - I have little doubt that Clark has been a big part of the issues of Canada’s (and particularly BC’s) vulnerability to Chinese interference.

I think so. Although she is not remembered fondly in BC, if anyone east of BC heard her “advantages” over the others running, I think she could have made a go at it. A photogenic blue business-friendly Liberal with no ties to the current mob? I could see all those Ontario and Atlantic Blue Liberals running back to the Liberal Party. That she exposed her ethical flexibility this early is surprising.

For a brief period between her resignation from Cabinet and running to replace Gordon Campbell, she had a radio show on CKNW in Vancouver. She took every opportunity to bash Harper and the Teachers’ union (that’s another thread about that obsession of hers).

As soon as she became leader, she did everything possible to sidle up to Harper and be seen supporting him. I don’t think the Rocky Mountain Information Force Field allowed Harper’s PMO to realize how she badmouthed him publicly. The Tories played along with her, so much so that most uninformed people were convinced that she was a Tory.

Lying and gaslighting comes second nature to her.

That too. There’s a reason why she’s referred to as Shanghai Christy!

Her shlepping of panda bonds was but one of the items on her menu…
And the events in Wilful Blindness occurred during her watch. At best, she was wilfully blind because of the economic “benefits” of all that dirty money sloshing around Vancouver.

Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if they really started during Gordon Campbell’s time. When Dick Fadden testified on Chinese influence in government many years ago, you would have thought he had specifically mentioned the BC Government, given Campbell’s reaction. It was right up there with John McCallum’s reaction.

The CPC needs to be cautious - their actions when forming the GoC and putting in place preferential treatment for companies from China suggest they are also fully compromised.
