It was only impossible to fail in the 07-08 time frame and it was personality-specific (give him another chance, give him another chance, give him another chance...).
Those days are gone. The leadership at all levels is outstanding and there are more than enough candidates to fill the available spots so not standard = fail. Everyone still gets mentored though as it's better to bring someone up to the standard than exclude those who don't and bullseye them, at the end up the day if they can't be brought up to the level they're gone.
And unlike even when I went through when Infantry fail = OT to something else, now multiple fails = recommended release.
