The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Regional Minister for Manitoba, on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for the Status of Women, today announced a $16.9 million contract award to Peerless Garments, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for the production of 33 000 sets of Naval Wind Raingear for the Royal Canadian Navy. This announcement supports our Canadian Forces with the equipment they need while creating 30 jobs in Winnipeg.

The contract award announced today resulted from a competitive procurement process. This improved Naval Wind Raingear will provide the Royal Canadian Navy with equipment that is comparable to the raingear currently used by the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force personnel.

The acquisition of the raingear is funded under the Naval Improved Clothing and Equipment (NICE) project, an initiative of the Department of National Defence, tasked with improving equipment to ensure sailors are prepared for domestic and international operations in all geographical and climatic conditions. The new raingear is expected to be distributed to naval personnel starting in late spring or early summer 2012.
