University president to be next GG: reports

University of Waterloo president David Johnston has been chosen to succeed Michaëlle Jean as Canada's next Governor General, according to reports.

University of Waterloo president David Johnston has been chosen to be the next Governor General of Canada, according to reports.

Johnston, known as a legal scholar, will take over from Michaëlle Jean, whose term is ending in September, the Globe and Mail and CTV reported Wednesday night.

Originally from St. Clements, Ont., Johnston taught law at Queen's University and the University of Toronto. He was also the principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University and dean of the faculty of law at the University of Western Ontario.

Johnston, 69, also served on provincial and federal task forces and committees.

Most recently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper asked Johnston to advise the Conservative government on what shape a public inquiry into the Mulroney-Schreiber affair should take.

I think Mr Johnston is an excellent choice. His selection marks a move away from populism and political correctness back to professionalism. He appears relatively neutral in his past dealings with governments, and has an outstanding educational pedigree.

MM,

Great article find.

It's funny how such a vast majority of Canada is white yet it strikes some as strange that a white person would get employed at something.

Thanks for the kind words, Pet.  I just know what I read in the papers.

This from CanWest/National Post:
Just moments after it was officially revealed Thursday that University of Waterloo president David Johnston will become Canada’s next governor general, the 69-year-old legal scholar made one pointed reference in a short speech given in the foyer of the Senate that instantly distinguished him from the current holder of the post, Michaelle Jean.

“As the representative of the Queen of Canada, who is our country’s head of state, I pledge to be a stalwart defender of our Canadian heritage, of Canadian institutions and of the Canadian people,” Johnston said.

As innocuous as the statement sounds, the deliberate reference to Queen Elizabeth’s status in Canada’s constitutional hierarchy signalled a notable rhetorical shift from Jean, who angered monarchists and provoked a memorable spat with the Prime Ministers Office last year by referring to herself — not the Queen — as Canada’s head of state ....
Let the fracas re-start....
