To reuse the runways at Adak Ak is being considered as a base for Naval sub hunters.

Adak hunh?

That makes Cold Lake look positively metropolitan.  Need to find some pretty patriotic flyers for that posting.  Or cycle them in and out of Hawaii.

My hunch would be that it's a det from Whidbey Island.

From Janes and Wiki, no VP squadrons are posted to Hawaii anymore - they got moved in 2017 from PatWing 2 to PatWing 10.

I guess that alternative basing might be Kodiak where there is a large Coast Guard air station or Elmendorf.

Or a rotating Sqn deployment perhaps, like Kadena, JIATF, Sig are?

Yeah, that's more likely.

The Navy would want to be able to patrol the Bering Sea.

From talking to the USN guys at different locations, I got the sense that where deploy a Det (usually 1, sometimes 2 planes), they deploy a Sqn and then deploy whatever size Dets from there if needed.  Their deployed base becomes like a FOL or something.  I had a good chat with a AW2 on JIATF last spring;  they seem to typically take a whole Sqn on 'deployment' (6 months) and may hit different NASs during that 6er.  He couldn't quite get why 'we' would deploy Dets for short times, go back to Homeplate, re-deploy again...I agreed.  I wish we did things like they did.  6 months deployed, home for 12 or 18...

I say its a great time to be in a ASW trade!  8)

There's Shemya too;  it was able to take P-3s.

Not so fond memories of operating their in the early/mid 80s.  One runway and bad wx and those large obstacles around the runway.  Good news was one rarely saw them as the ceiling was normally around limits whenever I was there.  Strategic location to be sure.
