Hey, i am 16 and was just wondering would it be a better idea to join reserves this year or wait till im 18 and join full time ? give me your opinions.

I think you should spend some time reading these forums.  You'll find that very discussion in a few threads, plus the answers to a lot of questions you haven't thought of yet.  Once you have enough information, then you can make a decision based on your circumstances.

Yup, he did answer your question, you just didn't get spoon-fed the answer like you wanted.  Did you perform a search to see if that question had been asked before?

It's amazing what happens when you punch this into Google:

site:army.ca 16 wait until 18 join

That would be because there isn't "an answer" to your question.  There are three possible responses ("go Reg", "go Res", "go away"). Any of those might be the right one for you, but I don't know enough about you to tell you to do one or another.  Neither does anyone one else here. Don't look for anonymous people on the internet to make your decisions for you, we can offer information - and there is lots of it here - but we cannot make your choices for you.

This is entirely your call. Ask yourself what the difference is? All you CAN do is go Reserves right norw or Cadets, right?  So do it or dont. NOTHING is stopping you from either. You've answered your own question actually.

Thats an opinion, and thats what you asked for. But they are like arse holes, everyone has them...and as a courtesy to others like Mum always said; "  manage your own."

I would say do not join until you finish high school, then apply for reg force.... Just an opinion since you asked for it...

The answer to your question is dependant on your intentions ...

IF you intend to eventually go Regular Force, then wait and go Reg Force when the time comes.

If you intend to stay a Reservist for a while (5-10 years minimum) then it's worth it to join the Reserves first.

The reasons being ... if you join the Reserves then attempt to CT to the Regs, by the time you've completed training and started your CT, you'll end up wasting more time waiting for the transfer than you did IN the Reserves in the first place, only to find out that your Reserve qualifications don't nessesarily count and you may have to do them all over again (including Basic in some cases)

Currently, the estimated timeline for CT from the Reserves to the Regs is 12-18 months.

So, figure out what you want to do long term, do the time-line math, and decide whether it's worth it or not.

You also have the choice to go into a recruting center where Recruters like Otis are pretty well informed and will talk to you about the jobs you'd be interesting in doing (I suggest you prepare a list of questions) and, by all means, don't hesitate to read all the threads on this forum and trust me, they are full of answers.

Like others told you on this page, this is YOUR decision and nobody can make it for you here ;)

Good luck! Alea hit it on making a list...might sound strange but when I went in the first time  all my qiuestions came back to me as I was leaving. Now I keep a small note pad for any questions regarding anything.

Tell us what you decide

Education is NEVER a bad idea....im not in the military yet but if I was you I would go reserve until high school is over and they reset and make a decision from there...I dont know many(if any!!) people who regretted getting a high school diploma :2c: :cdn:  Let us know
