A police officer has been killed in the line of duty in Kimmirut, a small community in Nunavut, the RCMP has confirmed.
A news release from the Mounties said police would be releasing more details at 11 a.m. ET in Ottawa.
The officer's name has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Kimmirut, a community on Baffin Island, is formerly known as Lake Harbour. According to the community's website, it has a population of about 425 people, 91 per cent of whom are Inuit.
The site describes Kimmirut as a community known for its "warm, friendly people and traditional indigenous Inuit culture and way of life."
