Teen Walmart worker found dead at store in mysterious oven incident - Halifax

This sounds horrible.

A teenage Walmart employee was found dead at her Canadian superstore in a mystery reportedly involving a large baking oven.

The 19-year-old worker was found around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at a Walmart in Halifax, Nova Scotia, according to local police, who said Occupational Health and Safety was called in to help in the “sudden death” investigation.

While Halifax cops said Monday that “the cause and manner of death” were still under investigation, multiple sources told Global News that it involved a large baking oven that was still on when authorities arrived.

Global News identified the teenager as a member of the Sikh community.

A couple of our staff from Nova Scotia were talking about that at work...one is a Paramedic from Halifax and heard about it from one of her colleagues. Just shudder thinking about it...

It is hard to fathom how the safety devices built into an industrial baking oven could have not worked.
Could be malfunction (or even broken for a while just not fixed). Could be actively disabled because it is inconvenient, could be person panicked (or wasn’t properly trained) and failed to activate any of them.

All of the above is just speculation but from what I have seen of safety systems is they only work well if people are insistent on maintaining them.

I cannot fathom that an industrial oven exists in Canada today where it cannot be shut off and opened from the inside.

Agree.

CBC radio is reporting that she was discovered by her mother, also an employee.

I'm not exactly sure what a "walk-in" oven is.

Always sad to read these stories,

a co-worker, who mistakenly believed Melena was in the bathroom, filled the pressure cooker with 12,000 pounds of canned tuna and it was turned on.

His body was found two hours later after the pressure cooker, which reached a temperature of 270 degrees, was turned off and opened.

Not commenting on any case in particular, but I had read of safety exits sometimes being blocked by pallets etc.

I can't speak to other provinces, but just on the face of it, the employer should be charged under Health & Safety regulations. All walk in enclosures, whether ovens, fridges or otherwise, that pose a danger of entrapment, require mechanisms that allow the door to be opened from the inside.
Assuming she was physically capable of opening it when it was turned on.

Yep. I only mentioned one law that could've been violated. There are a bunch more that could be laid. Without knowing all the details, I can still pretty well guarantee the employer will end up in court.

There's a video floating around from a Walmart employee showing how their ovens work. Looks virtually impossible to get lo ked inside by accident, someone has to close and lock the door from the outside.
