The US and the UK are on track to sign a “very good” trade deal, Donald Trump has said.
The US president said he is working on a “great trade agreement” with the UK that would allow Britain to dodge US tariffs.
“We’re going to have a great trade agreement, one way or the other, we’re going to end up with a very good trade agreement for both countries, and we’re working on that as we speak,” he said during a joint press conference alongside Sir Keir Starmer.
He added that details would be finalised “very quickly” and that the vice president JD Vance is working on the deal.
Asked if Sir Keir tried to persuade him not to impose tariffs on the UK, Donald Trump quipped: “he tried”, before saying that the prime minister had “earned whatever they pay him”.
“He was working very hard at lunch,” Mr Trump said. “I think we could very well end up with a real trade deal where the tariffs wouldn’t be necessary.
“In all seriousness, I think we have a very good chance at arriving at a deal that could be terrific, really terrific.”

Analysis: The PM has come away with clear wins – unlike Macron
With three vital words, Donald Trump made Sir Keir Starmer’s visit to the White House a success.
“I support it,” said the president, when asked whether he backed Article V of the Nato treaty, which binds the US and every other member to come to the defence of any ally.
Barely a fortnight after Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, sent tremors through Europe by appearing to suggest that America’s commitment to Nato was conditional and wavering, Mr Trump offered reassurance.

‘Britain can take care of themselves,’ Trump quips over support for UK peacekeepers
Asked if the US would come to the UK’s aid if British troops were attacked by Russia while keeping the peace in Ukraine, President Donald Trump said: “You know, I’ve always found about the British - they don’t need much help.
“They can take care of themselves very well.
“It sounds like it’s evasive but it’s not evasive. You know, the British have been incredible soldiers, incredible military, and they can take care of themselves.”
The president went on to reassure Sir Keir Starmer, telling reporters he would “always be with the British” if they “need help”.
“But if they need help, I’ll always be with the British, OK? I’ll always be with them - but they don’t need help,” he said.
Sir Keir responded by saying the alliance between the US and the UK was “the greatest alliance for prosperity and security ... the world has ever seen”.
“I’m very proud of our country - but we’ve also always been there backing each other up,” he said.
“That is why this is the greatest alliance for prosperity and security, I think, the world has ever seen.
“Whenever necessary, we’ve absolutely backed each other up.”
not a good look, meeting was going well until Vance jumped in, and essentially caused an international argument in front of the media
