Updated Army Service Dress project

That’s a real risk of the RCN exceeding their authority on rank designations — that by the time the new “pirate ranks” make it to cabinet, it’s a cabinet formed by another party that makes the decision not to amend the KR&O — forcing the RCN to backtrack and sheepishly try to explain years of using illegal rank designations.

Authority levels are there for a reason — that’s the level that owns the decision, and has to justify it or deal with any backlash. Stepping outside those authorities is risky, and shouldn’t be taken lightly. As was done in this case.
Has anyone actually been charged for referring to themselves as a Leading Seaman?

No. The charger wouldn’t have a legal leg to stand on.

Especially if they were a pirate ;)

Not sure where to put this, but, has anyone heard rumors on big dress changes being made? I heard that inf units will switch to a dark blue beret, Abn retain maroon, rifles green but no mention of Highlanders. As part todays COs make the decision in the next year and it becomes irrevocable. Cadpat (new) will be in with larger belt loops to facilitate stable belts and tucked in shirts. Sam Browns for officers on a brown sorta serge brit uni (pix elsewhere) Offr headdress beret or forage cap. Some tampering with messkits as well. Rule F%%%%%% Britannia!

Where did you hear this? I suppose in an era where the Army is low priority for money due to ships and planes, these small budget projects are what remains within our control.

I believe the new army field dress (Canadian Army Combat Ensemble (CCUE)) will have bigger belt loops, but that is to allow the wearing of thicker battle belts. Have not seen any talk about stable belts.

The new Canadian Army Service Dress is currently planning on having a Sam Browne for Officer's and CWOs. There is a prototype forge cap for wear in Number 1 order of dress, maybe also number 3. Have not heard any talk about switching beret colours.

Personally, having worn both green and midnight blue berets, I think the midnight blue berets generally look nicer than the dark green ones.

The artillery and signals switched to the midnight blue beret a few years ago. The current green berets don't have much historical significance other than being the default beret colour since unification. Midnight blue is sort of the pre-unification default headdress colour for the army

If what you've heard is true, I'd assume highland regiments would continue to wear their current headdress. Perhaps the belt loops on the combats will be a bit bigger but they are already wide enough for stable belts and rigger belts... the prototype of the new army service dress (pics in this thread) do have noticeably wider belt loops for wearing regimental parade belts in summer uniform though.

If they want to go historical . . .

Yes. 56 years is not much significance in comparison to the 15 years when the “Army Blue” beret was the default Canadian colour after the British introduced it the beret during the Korean War.

As an aside, the stable belt is another thing that only had 15 years of Canadian “tradition” for non-cavalry units. The 1950s is also when non-cavalry units of the British Army started to wear those belts. Canada dutifully followed suit.

I mean, non-horsey people wouldn’t really be in a “stable” for any reason…

As an aside, the RAF also has a stable belt for reasons.
