US Presidential Election 2024 - Trump vs Harris - Vote Hard with a Vengence

As a Canadian, if I could vote I would not vote for Trump because of the implications for Ukraine and the wider issue that causes. If the US pulls its support, there won’t be any incentive to commit as far as Canada is concerned, giving Canada yet another excuse to not spend on defence.

Committing in Ukraine and shaming us seems to be working but time will tell.

Interesting that we both want to see Canada increase defence spending/capability, but you think Harris could achieve that where I think Trump would more likely do so.

Harris will just be Obama v3.
So, the last admin where the world writ large thought the US had it still “together”. As in, the divisions weren’t so apparent.

I fail to see the problem here.

Canada could increase defence spending in step with the US under a Harris admin. Canada would increase defence spending because of the US in a Trump admin.

I think most CAF members want to see that.

But I don’t feel that isolationism and trying to placate Putin the way Trump wants to do will encourage Canada to spend more. What would be the point if we aren’t going to seriously try and deter Putin.

And if Putin isn’t a threat then why spend on defence at all.

Trump placating Putin like advising the EU to get off dependency on Russian energy supplies? That kind of placating? I'm in.

Under a Harris admin Canada could but hasn't yet and we can safely assume by now won't. Under Trump, there might be conditions set that force Canada to do so.

I don't think your eternal optimism is justified at this point in time.

Obama's foreign policy was disaster and encouraged people like Putin to push the boundaries.

Absolutely

Against anything that benefits Russia. I believe Trump benefits Russia.

That isn’t the placating I was speaking to though.

Now tell me. Are you for or against Russia keeping the territory it has invaded?

Against.

I'll wait for an example where Trump benefitted Russia over American interests.

Perfect. So we agree that any negotiated peace with Ukraine that involves Ukraine giving up their territory that has been taken is a bad thing.

It seems we also agree that Russia is in fact a threat.

I’m wondering what insight you might have into how he will deal with that situation?

Within the first page of a Google search on “Trump benefit Russia” - and I steered clear from Dem or GOP representatives’ pages.

Not entirely accurate. There is far more grey area here than you'd like to admit.

Yes Russia is a threat, Capt Obvious.

I don't know how, but I suspect he will be more effective than the DNC alternatives have been or will be.

You can't be serious.
