It seems interesting what the author is talking about, he seems to have experience since he is an ex special forces soldier. It seems to be interesting that despite budget cuts that are necessary for the American military, there seems to be less talk about closing down the operatonal bases that the United States has around the world. Can anyone here further speculate as to why possibly, there may be more desire to make cuts and lose the ability to acquire talented individuals instead of closing down bases abroad which seem to provide less advantage to the United States. It may seem that the pivot to Asia emphasis the need for operational bases abroad to counter the Chinese rise in the Pacific. Yet despite the China issue, does anyone believe that American operational bases around the world are more beneficial to America's needs

Once again, you are at it.

Why would a "Super Power", per say, want to give up Forward Staging Bases, as well as the various Diplomatic aspects involved with those nations?  There are numerous reasons, other than those, that would be involved in these decissions.

I haven't read the article or know sean m's history, but it wouldn't be hard to find people that think that "interventionist" foreign policy isn't benefiting the US. In the words of Ron Paul, "[they've] got an empire!"
