According to the Times of London (25 Nov 2002), the 1914-1918 conflict was first identified as a World War in 1914.

The first use of World War II is given as 11 Sep 1939 in Time Magazine. World War I was referred to as such in the same journal a week later.

The First World War, as also been called the Great War. One only needs to look at the conflict and then you‘ll understand why its called the Great War. It shaped 20th century thought and helped to create the modern world.

A good book on the subject is called "the rites of spring" it‘s written by a canadian.

It was also called The Great War because at the time (between WWI and WWII) everybody thought that there would never again be war on such a scale. Obviously they were wrong.
