First of all, I would like to acknowledge the great amount of wisdom and knowledge provided by the senior members of this forum.

Here is the run down ....

I am applying for the ever so popular Pilot position in the Canadian Forces. My home recruiter is out of Hamilton, Ontario. So far my initial screening and reliability checks are completed and favorable.

Since I am applying as an ROTP recruit with the goal of attending the RMC in '09. My application and all the necessary papers are already submitted for the RMC.

Here is where i need some clarification....

Recently wrote my CFAT (as a pilot, officer designation) and passed. I was sent out for my medical across the hall and completed that. During that time I received my Air Crew Selection Medical Package (blood work, eye work and doctor references papers etc).

Next, after lunch I had my interview. I had the standard questions asked and answered to the best of my memory/ability. After a few minutes the recruiter called me back into his office and saw no reason for my to not become an officer in the forces. He congratulated me and said the interview went fine (i was nervous).

Now here is where i am stumped....

1) Did i pass my CFAT as a pilot candidate based on the higher level needed to be even considered as a pilot since my medical was conduced right after.

or

Did i pass and they do the medical and interview anyways ?

2) Once my medical files come from the 3rd party opinions and sent to Ottawa, whats next Air Crew Selection in Trenton?

I appreciate the help, I was overwhelmed with information that day, and need to be clear as to my near future. I tried running a search before but could not find something so specific.

Thanks,

Question 1) Did i pass my CFAT as a pilot candidate based on the higher level needed to be even considered as a pilot since my medical was conduced right after.

Answer 1 - You needed to pass CFAT in order to be processed further. if you had failed you would have been counselled to consider something else and not sent to medical.

Question 2 Once my medical files come from the 3rd party opinions and sent to Ottawa, whats next Air Crew Selection in Trenton.

Answer 2. Once you gather your aircrew medical and submit it you will be scheduled for Air Crew Selection in Trenton.

If you have questions, call the MCC who interviewed you. They can explain the steps. Don't worry, we throw a lot of information at applicants and expect them to ask questions  later. Good Luck.

Thank you for your quick reply.

My next major obstacle to conquer is the Air Crew Selection in Trenton, Anyone have any tips and a heads up of what I might expect.

More aptitude testing ?
More medicals (obviously) ?

You might want to try searching "Air Crew Selection" using the search function.  The process has been discussed to great lengths because, well, there are a hell of a lot of people who want to be pilots.  ;D

But yes, in a nutshell, you do some more medical testing, some more aptitude tests and do some flight simulator stuff.

As my MCC said to me, "The CF is full of people who wanted to be Pilots."

Add "ASC" and "CAPSS" to your search. Good luck.

Here is a update.....

Instead of starting a new Topic, I will just revive this one.

Today I had my visit with the optometrist. My eyes are healthy BUT my vision is 20/25 - and 20/25 + uncorrected . He said I am borderline. Does this disqualify me as a ROTP pilot candidate by the new standards ?

Your input is greatly appreciated, especially the folks in recruiting.

I tried calling CFB Hamilton, but the medical staff was not available today.

I was so nerveous doing that test, i think it messed me up. :(

I'm sure your optometrist must know
Because when I went for my last eye exam in Aug I asked him if my Eyes met the CF Standards and he said according the latest information he had, they were well with in the acceptable range.

He seemed a bit uncertain. He said 20/20 in both eyes. However I know they changed the standard as of last year.

I am looking for the official numbers.

20/20?
I have seen CF members with glasses for years.
odd
I know there are some medical personnel on the Bord, they would know much more.
And I think there is a post some where with the newest standards.

The pilot trade is more demanding, especially when it comes to vision.

If someone can direct me to that thread during with new standard (related to pilot) I would be much obliged.

Pilot needs V1 standard to get in.

Take a look at this thread, it may help you.

I believe there is a new standard for pilot (v2) which was introduced last year. I am trying to find the most updated guideline out. I tried doing a search but all I got was speculation and news articles about the leniency of the new standard.

Here we are .... I found this on the DND site dated July 25, 2007.

New Vision Standard for Pilots

During the application process, the pilot candidate’s eyes will be tested for both near sightedness and far sightedness.

In terms of distance, the better eye must be at least 6/12 or 6/18 and the other eye 6/18 or 6/30 correctable to at least 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye.

With regards to near sightedness, the candidate will be tested for reading at 30-35 cm and 100 cm. For this examination the individual must have N10 and N24 in the better eye and N10 and N24 in the other eye as well. Their vision must be correctable to N5 and N14 in the better eye and N6 and N18 in the other eye.

*NOTE: The refractive error must not exceed plus or minus 5.00 dioptres (+/- 5.00D) spherical equivalent in either eye. Spherical equivalent is determined by algebraically adding half the cylinder part of the correction to the spherical part of the correction, (cylinder/2) + sphere.

According to the "new standards" I still qualify. My vision is 20/25 + and 20/25 - . Here is the conversions chart.  My vision is bolded.

Foot       Metre
20/200 6/60
20/160 6/48
20/120 6/36
20/100 6/30
20/80 6/24
20/60 6/18
20/50 6/15
20/40 6/12
20/30 6/9
20/25 6/7.5
20/20 6/6
20/16 6/4.8
20/12 6/3.6
20/10 6/3

CEEBEE and Narcisse,

Do not post information as fact unless you know it to be true. The standards have changed and have been discussed at length on this site. Do a search and good luck in your application.
