Cost of housing in Canada

At least we / they can soon gawk at a new TV series about Toronto's "obnoxiously luxurious" homes.

"Luxe Listings Toronto" debuts Friday on Prime.

Meh. Could just as easily be Vancouver…

I wonder how well it will do in Canada. I suspect there will be a lot of "hate" watching, and a lot of angry posts about it all over social media.

No doubt.

Skimmed it only to see which neighbourhoods were featured.

High rollers buying these outrageously priced masoleums will be contributing property tax to the City.

A percentage of which will go towards our emergency services. So, that's a good thing.

In spite of the high cost of local real estate, the property tax rate remains relatively low.

How are students and immigrants allowed into Canada without the means to support themselves?
To be fair to those groups, basically anyone having to start out fresh at the moment with no family support is basically in the same boat and likely very close to homelessness. If someone gets kicked out of the home at 18, good luck to them as with the costs of rent, crappy job market, and overall difficulty to afford anything the odds of them getting ahead is severely restricted.

Well ya see...when a country has a government as committed to incompetence as strongly as ours is, anything is possible!

Now read the following in a Chrystia Freeland voice in your head:

"Think of it this way - when students and immigrants arrive here without the savings or means to support themselves, they quickly have to learn how to cope with existential stress in a way they may not have known before...and that's a skill that can only benefit them as they go through life...

So you see, eliminating previous requirements for people to have X amount of savings in their bank account and a family member or family friend to act as a safety guarantor in order to jack up immigration numbers to be staggeringly high wasn't us being irresponsible & ill-prepared...

It was our way of welcoming newcomers and giving them a taste of what being a Canadian citizen will be like a few years down the road for them." 🇨🇦🍁❤️

So . . . what doesn't kill you (or us, as a nation) makes you stronger?

Yep lots of abuse hurled their way which is mostly unjustified.

That being said I have also seen plenty of videos on tiktok and the like of international students coaching each other on how to exploit our food bank system even if they have the funds.

I remember when I was attending college 2015-2017 when the international student thing was really starting to pick up. Blatant cheating, constantly late to class, constantly being disruptive. No professor being allowed to discipline them. Our professors trying to say ‘it’s their culture’ as though it’s a excuse for their terrible behaviour.

Our institutions used them as a cash cow, and decided to throw their ethics and standards out the window to make it happen. Our government let them use it as a back door immigration system because they would not have qualified otherwise.

Many of them are willing to cheat and game the system as that is literally what they are doing to get here. We can’t expect people who came here under false pretences to act ethically just because they arrived here.

It doesn’t mean there isn’t legitimate international students or that they all cheat the system, out of the 20 or so I regularly dealt with about 2 of them showed up on time, didn’t disrupt the class and didn’t cheat on tests. Not the greatest odds.
