A Deeply Fractured US

Brad, you know that the current President of Ukraine isn't the guy who was doing the side deals earlier right? As well that Big Z ran on a an anti-corruption mandate and has made a lot of reforms that resulted in jailing corrupt politicians...
Yes, but that's irrelevant. I'm talking about the way some of the ordinary people - meaning the kind who probably can't tell one person whose name begins with "Z" from another - are liable to react. If the war is going indifferently and people think Biden is essentially guilty of something at least adjacent to what Trump was impeached for ham-fistedly trying to uncover, people who favour Biden and war support may find themselves losing both.

Man, you can't make this shit up, or maybe you can.

But of course they could make it up, and they did.

Devon Archer was convicted of fraud and sentenced to a year in prison in spring 2022. He requested and was given bail pending appeal. He lost his appeal a month and a half ago. That means he has a year to serve in prison. Prosecutors asked his lawyer to propose a report date to prison, and his lawyer refused to citing an anticipated further appeal.

Since Archer’s counsel won’t agree to propose a date to begin his sentence, on July 29th - two days ago - DOJ wrote to the court proposing that the court order him to surrender and report to jail to serve his sentence “at a date and time to be chosen by the court”. DOJ did not propose a report date before his testimony. Nor would DOJ possibly expect one to result, since they filed a routine legal request on the Friday before Monday testimony. That doesn’t get turned around nearly that quick. He’ll testify to congress today, long before anything results from DOJ’s Friday request to the court. DOJ’s letter is here: Letter Motion – #1073 in United States v. Galanis (S.D.N.Y., 1:16-cr-00371) – CourtListener.com

Obviously the timing is ripe to fuel conspiracy theories, but the frankly dishonest reporting and speculation on this doesn’t stand up to any real scrutiny. You got sucked in by bullshit again.

Of course they did. It's the New York Post. The least credible major news outlet in NY.
In fairness to the NYPost, many other outlets have covered the same story with the same spin, so it’s more systemic across the conservative-leaning media outlets.

It’s a basic lack of factual analysis and critical thinking- or else, deliberate media manipulation by those relying on the readers skipping the factual analysis or critical thinking. As usual, with legal matters, it’s helpful to take at least a few extra minutes when you see something sensational, to find and look at what is actually being said, done, or requested.

It was just really terrible timing on their (DoJ) part. Charitably, I suppose they didn't think through the context. Releasing it on a weekend, which is unusual, didn't help lessen the perception that it was timed to somehow influence Archer. DoJ has released a corrective statement.

Now if only people would learn to read everything critically and not let stuff that suits their political priors glide pass without examination.

Certainly a bit awkward, but the guy’s due for prison and has been actively trying to delay his surrender date following a recent appeal loss. No surprise that whoever’s handling his file (probably one of many files on their plate) bashed off and sent a letter to move the file forward. Nothing about that letter sent on Friday would conceivably have interfered with his testimony today. The only reason it was necessary for DOJ to make any further communication during the weekend is because of people attempting to dishonestly manipulate the optics of this.

EDIT TO ADD: Mea culpa- the letter was sent on Saturday, not Friday. Potentially consistent with a DOJ lawyer putting in hours on the weekend to try to manage case load. In any case, nothing in the letter suggests any attempt at urgency that would have interfered with today’s testimony.

Whatever Trump was or is, he accomplished the near impossible.

He shone the burning sun on the Swamp and its inhabitants. He showed everyone the cesspool that is American politics. The malfeasance, corruption, lies and deceit. He exposed the self serving representatives that populate the place for personal gain. He has made the American public stand up and take notice of the farce which is Washington. He opened voters eyes from the slumber they've been in and put proof to what many suspected for so long.

That is probably the greatest political move and result anyone could hope for.

And all that with just a mirror!

I think Trump took advantage of a disconnect from the voting public and both parties. Without a doubt Washington has become a self-licking ice cream cone, regardless of party in power. Trump did upset the apple cart, but failed on bringing an alternative to effectually replaced it. What he has done is fuelled the frustration and anger that was already present and the blame for that is squarely on both parties. Blaming Trump is an attempt to forgo the responsibility for the anger and frustration that has built for long time before he appeared on political scene.

You left out by doing pretty much exactly what he said he wasn’t going to do.
All he did is enlarge the swamp, and he milked the US tax payer mightily.

He’s a huckster con artist who needs to be in jail not running around like a deranged loon.

So he drained the swamp...into a bigger swamp?

I remain convinced that Hunter Biden is not fit to hold public office
That shouldn't be a problem..

Donald Trump has been charged in a four count indictment with Conspiracy to Defeaud the United States, Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding, Obstruction and Attempted Obstruction of an Official Proceeding, and Conspiracy Against Rights, all in relation to fraudulent attempts to reverse his loss in the 2020 election.

Indictment’s here; haven’t had a chance to read it yet beyond the offences charged.
