Hundreds of troops were today engaged in a desperate search for a British soldier kidnapped by the Taliban.
The man - who has not been named - was seized during a fierce gun battle with insurgents yesterday evening in the Babaji area of southern Helmand.

A Taliban source claimed he has been executed.

'The soldier was captured yesterday evening during a firefight. When the fighting got more intense we couldn't keep him so we had to kill him,' Qari Mohammad Yousuf said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The MoD today confirmed that the missing solider was British and his family had been informed of his disappearance.

'An extensive operation to locate him is under way,' it said in a statement. 'The individual was based in Central Helmand and was reported missing in the early hours of this morning.'
British forces have cancellled all other operations to hunt for him. Troops are carrying out air and land searches across the sprawling district.

It is the first time a British soldier has been kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

It is understood that he had been based at Checkpoint Salaang and had just finished duty when he was taken. He is believed to have been alone.

The Nato command in Afghanistan said the soldier had been listed as 'duty status whereabouts unknown' and a search was under way.

No further details were released. The spokesman would not comment on the Taliban’s statement.
It is believed the missing soldier may be a marine. He was operating in the area at the centre of a major British operation - codenamed Panther's Claw - in 2009.
At least three British soldiers have been killed in Babaji since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001. In total, 374 British soldiers have died while serving in the country.

The kidnap comes just days after the Taliban explicitly threatened to target Britain, France and the U.S. in revenge for the killing of their leader Osama Bin Laden.
Shot dead in a raid by U.S. troops, the 9/11 mastermind had been living in a compound in the town of Abbottabad in Pakistan.
Most of the troops in southern Afghanistan are American and British, however, soldiers from other countries also operate in the south.
Only one soldier from the foreign contingent in Afghanistan is believed to be in captivity.
In June 2009 insurgents captured American soldier Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl in southeastern Afghanistan and have released videos showing him in captivity dressed in both Afghan clothing and in military uniform.
The kidnapping came as David Cameron prepared to announce the withdrawal of a further 500 troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year.
The move will bring the total number of British Forces personnel to under 9,000 for the first time since the conflict began in 2001.

Also today, the outgoing U.S. commander in Afghanistan marked his last Fourth of July in uniform by speaking to American troops during a re-enlistment ceremony in the south of the country.
Gen. David Petraeus, who was recently confirmed as the next director of the CIA, told the 235 troops re-enlisting in Kandahar province that they have achieved progress on the battlefield but that 'much work remains' to be done in Afghanistan.
'You raised your right hand and said "Send me," and today you raised your right hand again and said "Send me again, if needed,"' he told the soldiers on America's 235th birthday.
'I cannot say how impressive your action is,' he said. 'It is the most meaningful display of patriotism possible.'
Petraeus will be replaced by U.S. Marine Lt. Gen. John Allen even as 33,000 U.S. troops begin to withdraw from Afghanistan, the start of President Barack Obama's promised withdrawal of all combat troops by 2014.

Upside? At least he'll get a decent curry for a change....

Sucks .... Condolences  :salute:

Meanwhile, the Taliban's Info-machine needs geography lessons if this is the same incident they're claiming responsibility for (usual caveats about clicking to a Taliban web page - screen capture of statement also attached)....
Mujahideen of Islamic Emirate reporting from Lashkargah city say that they captured an American invader alive this morning in Koki’s Washiryano area but later executed him due to increased search by the Americans.  Officials add that they also took possession of an automatic machine gun, mortar and other military equipment from the captive before his execution.  It should be mentioned that an American invader was also captured alive a while back and is still in captivity.

Edited to add:  Wait, they've changed it - see second attached file.

Despite the good day we had yesterday, my heart goes out to the family, friends and comrades in arms of Highlander McLaren. Such a sad thing to happen.
RIP Highlander.  :salute:

If anyone can contact the family of Highlander McLaren, please pass our sincere condolences along. We know the pain they are going through.

Pretty.  F***ing.  Scummy.
Mobile phones owned by relatives of UK soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan may have been hacked by the News of the World, it is being reported.

The Daily Telegraph claims the phone numbers of relatives of dead service personnel were found in the files of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.

It comes after Prime Minister David Cameron said he would set up a public inquiry into alleged phone hacking.

The Royal British Legion has dropped the paper as its campaigning partner.

The services charity said it was "shocked to the core" by the claims and was reviewing its advertising budget with the paper's owner News International, which also publishes The Sun and The Times.

News International said it would be "absolutely appalled and horrified" if there was any truth in the allegations relating to families of dead soldiers and it would be immediately contacting the Ministry of Defence ....

A follow-up....
In a stunning move, Rupert Murdoch's media empire announced Thursday it was shutting down the News of the World tabloid, Britain's bestselling Sunday newspaper, because of an alleged phone hacking scandal that has triggered a major public backlash here.

James Murdoch, a senior executive at his father's News Corp., said Sunday's edition of the News of the World would be its last. In a statement, he said the company accepted responsibility for the distress inflicted by the phone hacking allegations and the paper's breach of journalistic ethics ....

Shutting the paper is a fine way to get rid of evidence before the police investigate.

Having direct lines to the PM is another good way to influence the battle space.

Perhaps a boycott of all things Fox would be in order, since that network is also part of Rupert's empire?

Wonder how well a "Boycott the company that tapped the phones of the families of the fallen" campaign would work in the U.S.?

Not the aim, I think, nor would it work - I think all police/public inquiries will go ahead with or without NOTW actively publishing.

The aim, as I understand it, is to protect his takeover bid for British Sky Broadcasting. He already owns 30+% of BSkyB, he wants 100%. He had, previously offered to spin off Sky News as a separate company but now his 'fitness' to own any UK media is suspect in the public and political minds.

Oh, the Sky takeover is his vital ground here, but  dismissing the staff to the four winds, and scattering files and assets will make any efforts to determine what happened, and who knew of it that much more dfifficult to determine.

We got one, we got two, we got 13 more than you....

It wasn't Blair who brought peace to Ulster but brave British soldiers about to be branded as criminals

The low thump, thump, thump, was unmistakable. It was the sound of the Thompson machine gun, a chunky low-velocity weapon.

We all knew it was the IRA's weapon of choice. They liked its macho feel, and had used it on us a couple of weeks earlier when we were patrolling on the nearby Lonemoor Road.

But they had not hit any soldiers that day; they'd hit and injured a 12-year-old girl.
The sound this time came from somewhere near the Rossville Flats in the Bogside, a nationalist area of Londonderry and a known stronghold of the IRA.

I was standing looking down on the Bogside when I heard it, with Sgt Garrett, my second-in-command in the Coldstream Guards. I asked him to note down the time  -  4pm on January 30, 1972, and then we moved rapidly down the hill towards the sound of the gunfire

Gerry Adams interview tapes linking to IRA murder sought by U.S. court

Prosecutors in the U.S. are demanding that a university hands over to Britain taped interviews in which former IRA members purportedly accuse Gerry Adams of running a secret death squad.

Researchers on an oral history project for Boston College obtained the testimonies from two convicted IRA terrorists between 2001 and 2006.

Adams, president of Sinn Fein, has always denied being an IRA member, let alone heading a unit which – in kidnapping, torturing and killing suspected informants – carried out some of its most brutal acts.

The interviews being sought by Northern Ireland police are with Brendan Hughes, who was head of the IRA in Belfast, and Dolours Price, who took part in the 1973 Old Bailey car bombing and the unsolved killings of at least four people.
Both later fell out with Adams and Sinn Fein, criticising the Northern Ireland peace process.

Here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery....
A BRITISH soldier has been shot twice by a fellow squaddie in a training-ground exercise.

The lance sergeant was hit in the arm and leg. He suffered substantial blood loss from a severed artery.

Army chiefs believe the shooting during live-fire training in the plains of Alberta, Canada, was a horrific accident.

The victim, a Grenadier Guardsman, was flown to the UK for surgery at Selly Oak military hospital in Birmingham.

A defence source said yesterday: "The two soldiers were participating in exercises that simulate being fired at.

"British soldiers play the part of both the enemy and under-fire troops.

"They can be fairly chaotic exercises and are supposed to prepare us for what it's like to come under fire.

"Something clearly went wrong this time. It is believed the Guardsman was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The soldier who shot his comrade is serving with the King's Royal Hussars, also known as the "Tankies" ....

News Corporation (“News Corp”) announces that it no longer intends to make an offer for the entire issued and to be issued share capital of British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC (“BSkyB”) not already owned by it *.

Chase Carey, Deputy Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer, News Corporation, commented: "We believed that the proposed acquisition of BSkyB by News Corporation would benefit both companies but it has become clear that it is too difficult to progress in this climate. News Corporation remains a committed long-term shareholder in BSkyB. We are proud of the success it has achieved and our contribution to it." ....
