LAV 6.0

this is for all LAV6 variants due to reaching the end of its growth potential due to weight limits of 28000kg+/-?

the LAV 700 goes up to 32000kg +/-

Boxer is 38000kg+/-

so if we need more room for weight growth do we switch to a LAV700 or redesign the LAV more like a Bocer

didnt they swap some Piranha suspension elements in for the LAV700
If its that weight does it become a MAV instead? Where does it become a HAV?

At a certain point of weight, wheeled isn't really practical anymore (I would suggest that the was originally LAV-25, Bison etc 8x8 setups).

IMHO at around 15t you really get into this should be a tracked vehicle.

When you see the Boxer's off road in non dry conditions, you can see quite well that it wasn't the brightest idea.

I remember seeing Grizzleys and Cougars in Gagetown on RV 81 "off road in non dry conditions" and it wasn't a pretty sight - and they weighed a great deal less than the LAV III much less a LAV 6 or Boxer.

I'm a track guy. And I like composite track a lot. It reduces weight, maintenance, vibration etc etc.

I did combat team exercises in both M113s and Grizzly AVGPs. The Grizzly on one live fire attack, we need the Leopards to come pull out the several stuck AVGP.

It’s all about the ground pressure. The Bison 8x8 had way better off road ability than the AVGP’s, but yeah I’m with you on tracks.
Ground pressure on tracks is significantly lower than wheeled vehicles.

There's also a traction factor. Treads exert their pressure and pull across the entire length and width of the track while wheels are limited to smaller areas and likely to dig rather than pull. Obviously there's a point where even tracks can get mired.

I'll concede there are two areas where wheels have an advantage.

1) they do have better high mobility where road conditions are good. That was a clear advantage over metal tracks (both speed and crew comfort) but from what I hear about CRTs, that advantage has lessened considerably; and

2) in certain circumstances the wheeled vehicle still has sufficient manoeuverability (if just to pull out of the danger zone) when striking a mine or getting hit in one or two wheels whereas a tracked vehicle is pretty much snookered for movement when a track is sufficiently damaged.

Notwithstanding those circumstances, I still think that tracks have more advantages than disadvantages.

I appeared on a radio show in 1992 and the host was a crusty old CJOB guy and he asked how much damage a 113 did to a paved road. I basically told him the same - and added a woman in high heels exerts more PSI than a 113 on tracks. He treated me very well for the next two hours.
