In my opinion, on the heels of a couple of years of 'distance learning', many were in no mood to live through a repeat, and picking on the employees at or near the bottom of educational food chain didn't help. He might have been given a bit more slack if it had been the teachers, but 'reining in the union fatcats' by picking on the janitors gained him little sympathy and a more unified front.

The union obviously thinks it has momentum but better be careful. That looks like a generous legit effort offer.

very careful. If Ford has a legitimate offer on the table and they try to shut down the schools again there will be very little sympathy from the general public if the axe comes down again

There are exceptionally few people who will be getting pay raises that come close to inflation, if you happened to be one of them you should recognize that you are in the minority. Most will get something, and continue to fall behind inflation, just like they were before things went crazy this year.
