But, one can always change that channel, and watch and listen to the TV and radio shows you enjoy.

Read library books. Subscribe or cancel newspapers and magazines.

And that is why most radio stations manage to give you a 5 minutes news bulletin on the hour that covers just about all you need to know is happening in the world: Just facts written down in advance to be pithy, read by a single announcer.

Then you can go back to what matters ... music, horoscope and which cream to use for nighttime healthy skin.

A five-minute newscast these days is HUGE on most (esp. private sector) radio stations - 5 minutes may include sports & weather as well. I hear more like 2-3 minutes in many cases. At a typical reading speed, if there's no audio clip of a newsmaker, that's between 300 and 525 words to cover the top, say, 3-5 stories of the hour. Not much nuance to be had in 100 to 175 words dealing with sometimes-complex stories.

Also, factor in the fact that most people are only 1/2 listening to the radio most of the time (often as part of background noise, as opposed to sitting down to listen to it like listening to a podcast - look at me mixing media eras).

Even before click baiting, this is one reason journalists are typically taught to put the most important, ear-catching information into the lead of the story. Even in the old days, "if it bleeds, it leads," so bad/spectacular news drawing the ear/eye isn't a new phenomenon.

Back in the day, the Police Act of Ontario (which preceded both the Police Services Act and Charter) forbade us from having a election sign on our properties or doing anything of a political or partisan nature, on or off duty.

They never cared if we put a sign on our lawn - for a couple of weeks during an election.

Sure would be nice to see some of those whopping profits. Share prices are still down across the major telcos, which suggests the shares aren't relatively attractive to buyers right now, which suggests the whopping profits are going elsewhere - re-invested in the business, employee compensation, covering past borrowing, being set aside for contingencies because they expect things to get even tighter.

Problem is that the large media companies had bought out all those local stations, likley ran them into the ground to support the corporate HQ and now there is no juice left to squeeze, they get tossed away. Hopefully some of the locals can restart them as pure local stations.
