A Franco-German-Ukrainian triad would be an interesting change in dynamic.
I'm sure someone's already raised this on here: how much German hesitancy is a desire to let Russia kick the life out of a potential competitor? A well-educated, ambitious, populous, creative nation with aerospace, tech, and high-end manufacturing aspirations, and (especially for Europe) deep mineral and agricultural capacity would likely be a challenge to Berlin's economic position.
Also, how much would you have to bribe the Transnistria garrison to just let Moldova walk in? New passports and $1000 to **** off...

Now that the UK is 'out of Europe', that might actually be a good way to help UKR without the EU being involved in some way ...

Why would Germany and France give up leadership? - they have the two top economies and populations in Europe. Italy and Spain stand a modest third and fourth but are more culturally and emotionally part of the southern group. With the UK standing with one foot in and one foot outside of Europe there really is no one else with enough clout. Poland may be making the right noises and rearming well, but it's economy is still well behind the leaders. As for Ukraine - it has Canada's population but less than a tenth of Canada's economy. Despite a valiant defence, its economy will take decades to recover.

Even if it's speculative it's a good reason for the CAF to divest itself of mostly all European hardware. Just do as Canadians do, shop south of the border.

It's likely abject paranoia on my part, but in the digital age I do question putting all our eggs in the basket of an increasingly... temperamental ally who we may or not be in geopolitical alignment with at any given time. How long does our military operate if the US withholds contractor support as part of a trade spat/ if we want to use our military for a cause they don't support?

I’m pragmatic. The U.S. and some allies that have true skin in the game like the ROK, is the lowest risk solution. Not zero-risk, lowest risk. If Canada believes it has the will, productivity and resources to actually defends itself, sure…grow it at home. The issue is that Canada does not have two of the three aforementioned elements of self-defence.

Hell European nations are still buying Russian gas. Gas and oil needs just don't magically go away, so deals with the devil, particularly if you already have a high debt ratio and the price is good.

French get top billing rights, and two very feisty nations with them.
Unless Germany does a U turn at the next election, France is going to divorce them, as the Germans are all bark, but only have dentures.

I could see a joint Franco-Polish effort to station French nukes on Polish soil or French tech transfer/help in creating a Polish nuke force.

Further to this - if the Ukrainians were to come out on Jan 21, 2025 with the announcement that they have built a nuke weapon(s) I would not be shocked.....
