My guess (as a non armoured guy - and while I have stood on a M1A2 - thats the end of my experience... I wanted a pic ) is that the add ons are not that much weight in the great scheme of things.  As a side note the Bradleys in theatre here has ERA boxes on them -- but the M113' (static guard) and Strykers have slat armour.
