I wonder if this will impact the interest of CAF personnel (particularly those with dependants) to pursue/accept postings (or even long specialist qualifications) in the US.

I don’t imagine families will be too thrilled. Any signs there will be exceptions for those not on a diplomatic passport?

Do we start to pull our people out of these postings, save for NORAD, this APS ?

Or do we let it ride and see how it goes ?

I'm curious on how this would affect a US OUTCAN at all. I find it hard to believe that a family posted to the US isn't already registered with CBP and ICE because they're on official travel. If we're not doing the same thing for anyone posted to Canada on official travel, we're part of the problem.

Bingo.
As soon as you get posted down here, your spouse can get temporary employment visa for the duration.

I mean I would assume this is done already? Canadians have always been able to stay for 180 days in the US without a visa, but your customs documents require a physical address (or in the case of a long road trip your route plan and contact methods).

Heck when I come to Canada to visit family CBSA wants to know where I am going - and for how long, regardless if I give them my Canadian or my American passport (or both and let them decide how to log me).

You don’t need to provide fingerprints to come to Canada.

I don't think this would impact CAF members and their dependents posted OUTCAN, all of whom are posted on Green Passports with Visas, so they aren't visiting on 6-month tourist Visas.

Given you need to get retina scanned as well as prints for a lot of Visa’s here and for Permanent Residency applications, so I’m not seeing that this is a major issue, or a singling out of Canadians.

For Customs Tariff purposes, you're a "non-resident" even with your Canadian passport. That determines the line of questioning based on your entitlements of what you can bring in duty free (gifts, for example).

Foreign nationals can generally only be authorized as visitors for six months.
