Police Officers doing good things

Metro's finest doing their usual fine work in 1958.

My uncle was on the Metro force back then.

Trivia:

1958 was an interesting year in Toronto policing.

The 13 police forces in Metro had only been amalgamated the year before.

In the summer of 1958 ( this appear to have been filmed in the summer of that year ), the chief drove to High Park, parked his car, and committed suicide with his service revolver.

With amalgamation, the force grew in size and complexity, and XXX found himself unable to manage the huge agency and its Byzantine politics.

A good news story for VPD...

Metis siblings sworn in together in new crop of Vancouver police recruits

The Vancouver Police Department swore in 20 new recruits on Friday, adding to its current strength of 1,448 officers.

Among the new recruits is a unique duo, in fact, it’s a first for the VPD.

David Collette, 28, and Jennifer Collette, 26, are siblings, who were sworn in together.

“The Vancouver Police Department has been recruiting since 1886, and I can honestly say, I think this is the first time that we have hired a brother and sister at the exact same time,” Staff Sgt. Jason Howell told Global News.

Dayum... that (long) video was hard to watch. Nice job RCMP...

RCMP officer testifies Canmore man was 'shooting to kill' as judge releases video of incident

Canmore resident Austin Desylva was "shooting to kill" when he fired twice at an RCMP officer who'd attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the constable told a judge Wednesday.

Video of the dramatic shooting and pursuit was released by Court of King's Bench Justice Keith Yamauchi on Wednesday, offering a rare second-by-second glimpse into a police gunfight.

The incident took place on a Friday night in and around downtown Canmore starting with Desylva fleeing a traffic stop and shooting at Const. Reyno La Cock of the Banff RCMP.

Righteous shoot, no question there. ASIRT already cleared him. The suspect took two rounds in the neck, and after he bailed into the woods a tactical team and K9 found him not too far away. 3D printed handgun found nearby.

Unfortunately the officer might eat some internal shit for going over the air to say he’s going to ‘stop following’ and killing his lights and siren, then clearly continuing to pursue for what was, at that time, nothing more than a failure to stop. Pursuit policy is very against officers in such cases.

His instincts in going after someone who turned away from the impaired check stop were solid, and he did a great job keeping his cool, especially given that he was alone until well into the shooting at the cul de sac. If anyone sees a full length video, let me know, I’d like to see the whole thing.

From a layperson’s view of that video, he turned the lights off at 0:27 and in the process of slowing down into that turn, received a shot at 0:34….seven seconds later. One could argue that yes, he appeared to be following for a few seconds, but was he not also heading back to the RIDE stop? As well, buddy had a stretch where he was booking it, not just slow speed ‘lost/looking for an address’ time of driving.

The most dangerous slow speed chase (because of the snow) I've ever seen... more professional Canadian bad guys buy snow ties:

The video’s been spliced at several points. You can see they’re coming up to an intersection - I think a roundabout - and then it cuts out. Not sure how much was cut out, but at a minimum there were two more turns taken closely following the car before the first shots were fired. Policy on pursuit termination is immediately pull over, turn lights and sirens off, and report to dispatch (in this case he didn’t appear to have dispatch on his channel; not his fault). The purpose of that is to make it unequivocally clear to the suspect that you’re no longer after them; it’s a liability thing so that if something shitty subsequently happens there’s no shifting of liability to police in an argument that they continued to pursue when public safety would argue in favour of disengaging.

I’m not personally faulting the guy. I’m just saying it’s a thing that will likely come out in the wash and that I expect he’ll have to wear. Hopefully they let it slide on a note that ‘Member was provided guidance’.

I had read elsewhere that Desylva's lawyer would be pursuing excessive force charges against the RCMP constable. WTAF? I'll try to find that again.

I saw that as well. What a freakin crock of BS. The lawyer should go to jail for even suggesting it....

The officer got cleared by ASIRT back in the summer. He faces no criminal jeopardy. The lawyer can chew gravel.

Anything to take the light off the defendant...because it sounds like he was a pillar of the community just defending his right to free enterprise as a street pharmacist...

You have a career in public relations waiting for you...

"He was a family man and his family loved him. "

You know how many times I've read this in an obit about our scoundrels? Despite the facts that he had been incarcerated for half his life and had no contact with is kids - or his family.

I have to paraphrase this as I deleted it when I retired. I used to save obituaries for some of the more well known locals.

From a local paper upon the death of a community member.

So and So died unexpectedly last weekend after only recently reconnecting with his family. S&S had been away from the community for several years but always expressed an interest in returning. S&S was a talented artist and had a strong interest in youth activities. He will be remembered by many people.

In fact he was a pedophile who had served a number of federal sentences for molesting numerous victims, many his relatives. He had just been released on parole. He was the driver of the single vehicle impaired driving collision that claimed his life. He was a good painter though.

Good riddance...I know I know you're not supposed to cheer at someone dying....but....there is a special place in hell for men like this.
