That’s not how Canadian government works. One of the dysfunctions of Canada’s Westminster System is that we invest too much in imagining our Prime Ministers to be like US presidents to the point that we expect our members of parliament to be the sheep of their respective party leaders, and the party leader rules supreme. We absolve our MPs of responsibility & accountability because we transfer it all to the party leader.
A prime minister has never appeared on the election ballots of more than a small minority of Canadian voters. Canadians do not give them a mandate. Prime ministers get a “mandate” by achieving confidence of Parliament. We would not be in our current situation if the Liberal caucus (not the Liberal Party) had fired him and selected a replacement when they should have. Proroguing for a third of a year while selection of a PM is deferred to a political party should never be an option.
It's my understanding that the LPC has no mechanism to get oust a lame duck leader.
It's also my understanding that Trudeau is to thank for that as he adjusted their party constitution.
Lastly it's my belief we are now at least a year behind in forming a new Gov as the current one should have fallen some time ago, but it was propped up because narcissism and the NDP.
Trudeau and Singh have put us in a very precarious position. National unity and our economic future are all in question. And while I don't think they are treasonous, I think their stupidity and arrogance needs to be punished.
