The War in Ukraine

how long before the cannon fodder says no more. Or maybe their mothers and wives rise up. Those figures are insane.
A long time till they start having to harvest from the major cities, then a backlash, followed by a heavy response with lot's of deaths and then people feeling they have little to lose by opposing the regime. Right now the people in the nice places are minimally affected and that helps keep the regime running.

I've seen a video compilation on Twitter that someone put together of the "14 video confirmed russian suicides" that they could find during the month of July. 14 videos of Russian soldiers putting their rifles to their chins and pulling the trigger, or holding a grenade against their chests. I actually felt really bad for the Russian soldiers. I don't think the world has ever before had such access to the harsh realties of war. If those videos were shared during an "unpopular war" in the west, I can't see the government maintaining support. The fact that Russia just carries on boggles my mind.

We in the West get to see those video's. I doubt if Joe Q Vlad gets to.

We agree on this Lumber, we agree on this...

For them to truly believe, whether in general or in just that moment, that putting their rifle in their mouth is their best option...just oooofffff.

War truly is hell.

RUSSIA being Russia. They have not and I doubt they ever did think similarly to us. Russia has been ruled by a dictator or king since its inception.

The "why' needs to be considered. The majority of Russian soldiers no matter how patriotic (in addition to being essentially brainwashed about who and why they are fighting) are fighting for the substantial for them bonuses and pay. The fact that they are unlikely to see what they are promised due to corruption and malfeasance is not widely believed.

Only recently has their society started to realise that the injury benefits are at the whim of the soldiers command structure (CO and at least one other witness to confirm that the GSW to the gut was an actual COMBAT injury and not self (or unit) inflicted nor received when not in contact with the enemy).

In addition to the absence of TCCC level care at the front and the lack of medical care in theater the belief, not without justification, is that if wounded they will be sent back to a 'meat assault' unit and rarely (unless they can bribe their way) home for role 3 care in Russia.

Add to that the belief, sponsored by their church and leadership, that if captured they will be tortured in obscene and terrible ways until they die for the amusement (or to satisfy revenge) of their captors. Which they KNOW is practiced by their side with Ukrainian captives and thus strongly believe.

So when injured and abandoned by their comrades it seems the better choice to suicide or try to take out some enemy at the same time by becoming an IED. At least that way (they believe) their death in combat due to contact with the enemy will lead to death benefits going to their family. It is not unknown for family members to encourage or even push their men to sign up - knowing they are more likely than not to financially benefit from their injury or death (and possibly remove an underemployed abusive alcoholic from their life).

But to my mind, compiling their last moments and posting in social media for the clicks and followers is the far more dysfunctional and sick occurrence. Only just worse than the actions of those who seek out and watch war/death porn.

While we don't know the actual Russian death count, some estimates put casualties at higher numbers then the total troop count that took part in the initial invasion. It's amazing with all of this that the Russian Army can still function.

Go and look at how much punishment the Red Army took from 22 June 1941 until say Feb 1 1943 when the tide turned in their favour.
Millions and millions dead, wounded, captured.

My simple brain still has problems with the Arty use of 'caliber' to describe barrel length not internal diameter .....
It's a long standing thing, not just for arty but any barrel in general. German tank gun barrels were measured for length in calibre multiples and frequently expressed in the description e.g. 7.5cm Pak 40 L/46 or a navy 16-inch L/50. You have to admit that it beats describing guns by the weight of the solid shot projectile it could toss e.g. 6-pounder or 17-pounder or 25-pounder.

There's a bit of a discussion here.

That was a good article
Yes but it side stepped a critical issue/deficiency. Weapon range.

The improved radar will definitely make it easier to 'see' the enemy before being seen (and the ex Swedish AWACS / NATO AWACS) will help but that is only half of the " whoever acquired and services the target first will win" equation.

The other half had two issue they will be fighting against - US/German restrictions on targeting choices and distances from the border within Russia using their weapons/missiles, and the range advantage held by the top line Russian missiles.

The generation of AIM 120 AMRAAM (hint, "medium" range) they have been given so far has shorter legs (160-180km) than the Russian R37 (150-400km). Even allowing for US understatement and Russian exaggeration.

What they should be supplied with, and allowed to use to its fullest capability, is the Swedish RB101 "Meteor" BVRAAM (Beyond visual range) missile which has an acknowledged range of 200km which is further than even the AIM-54 Phoenix long range air to air missile.

Sweden and the UK both use this missile and have publicly stated they pose no restrictions on how Ukraine can use their weapons.

Unless the US leans very hard on them using their NATO membership and 'consensus' as blackmail to enforce Manchurian Jake Sullivans view

I don't think Meteor is integrated with the F-16

Ukraine does get data from NATO AWACS, that has already been OS admitted.

The R37 is an anti-AWACS missile, it’s not a practical missile for anti fighter work.

More than one pilot has told me you’d have to be drunk, blind and deaf to get hit by one in a fighter.

Not sure that it is compatible with the version of the F-16 they have.

Russia might tend to think that NATO AWACS are actively involved in targeting the VKS at that point.

Which to me has the potential to make things very messy.

I doubt the U.K. or Sweden really care about Snake Sullivan’s opinion at this point.

Or there was something planned that would have been too destabilizing and potentially escalatory if succesful?
Maaaaaybe something like this? Haven’t seen it elsewhere, but sounds like the right magnitude.
